Hello all!!! My head is at the machine shop and I figured since its there id get a gasket matching port job done. they asked me if I wanted the head milled. should I get it milled? I don't want to do anything extravagant but at the same time im going to be putting a 20g turbo with 3" IC piping and want the air flow to be as efficient and flow as much as possible. any thoughts would be great. Thanks guys!!

Yup it's always a good idea to get it milled. It removes any high/low spots on the head surface and helps head gasket sealing.

BTW 3" IC piping while it cant hurt, is a bit much for a 20g. Your money would be better spent elsewhere.

Check out the thread I created a few days ago,

http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/updated-ported-and-polished-my-head.481227/

There is a ton of information on porting, polishing, and general gains related to head work. Dont bother with a gasket match, you wont gain much. Getting rid of the castings on the intake and exhaust, and working the bowl on the intake will be the largest gains.

I also suggest watching all of Jafromobile's youtube videos on head work.

Plan on researching, reading, and learning for the next few days so you dont go wasting money and losing potential HP.

The only reason im using 3" IC piping is because I have a ton of it lying around collecting dust so its free to me. As far as gaining HP im not going all out. My plan is about 350-400 on pump-gas as a daily driver. im just looking for better flow that's why im just doing a gasket match. just enough to let it breathe a little better.

Are you running a mls or composite gasket. If you are running a composite and the head isn't warped than i wouldn't worry too much about milling the surface. If you do get it done, make damn sure they don't use a belt sander to surface it. As for port work, at the power levels you are looking at it is a total waste of money. That money could be spent way better elsewhere.

Port matching the head will not help it breath better. If anything, you will lose power.

You're best bet is to remove the casting marks, and if anything, work the bowl of each intake runner.

Agreed port matching to gasket size is not a good idea, especially on a 1g head. If you are gonna try and do some bowl work be prepared to need a valve job after, it really makes the work noticeable and your probably find clip a seat when angling your dremel to reach somewhere that you should really have an extended shaft for (yea I'm talking about myself).
