Do these insets go all the way through the slab, or just an inch or two like the cuts?

Those joints are 4" tall. You nail them to whatever existing slab you have, flush with the top of the existing slab, most standard slabs are 3"-4" thick so they usually go all the way through.

This thread just makes me smile. :) I hope I can post about my dream garage some day.

If you can convince all of us Wisemen and Moderators to take a pay cut, you can probably save that cash to get started on yours Chris. I'm sure the other guys would understand. Pull like 10 grand from each of our salaries here, and you can build a really nice one! Just write our names in the cement as tribute, and send Lando an extra small t shirt and make him post pics wearing it.

Great work, Kyle. I'm sad I didn't get to see it in person before we moved! I'm extremely jealous, but I'm right along with everyone else in doing the same thing once I buy a house, haha.

Uh oh, you're over on the left coast now, huh Jax? Still planning to drive to the Shootout? Did you get your car smogged yet? Ughhh... my love/hate relationship with this state.

I already did that... for some reason I still didn't have enough. :p LOL

Thanks! Being your family resides in Jacksonville I'm sure you'll be back from time to time!

Hope all is well on the west coast!

Just a little update. When we bought the house the fence on the side where my shop was being built was just a fence, no gate, so with all the dump trucks and concrete trucks coming I had just removed the fence completely.

Now that the majority of the construction was completed I wanted to get a double gate up so I could easily get my trailer/cars in and out so we did that yesterday.

Talk about a pain in the rear, it's things like these that I'm like oh that shouldn't be that bad, and then I find out I was completely wrong haha.

All in all it turned out great though!

Been a while since I updated, Finally had the extra money to get the last 4 of my T8 Light fixtures installed, and I started building a few shelving units and moved most of my car related stuff from the attached garage out to the shop. Been hoarding these stackable bins from work whenever they are throwing them away, one can never have too many bins!

I ordered my lift last month but due to me wanting the low-profile arms it had been on back order for the better part of a month, that being said, it finally arrived this past weekend and got it all set up!

1800lbs of goodness!

If any of you guys are curious that happens to be a 1991 Dodge Spirit RT , I did some work for a friend and instead of paying me he gave me the car, I didn't know much about it aside from it was a turbo 5spd sedan from the 90's. After doing some reading I found that they only made 1500 of them, and have some crazy power plant that is unique to those 1500 cars, and the dodge guys melt for them.

I ended up selling it for $2000 and it needed quite a bit of work, not bad considering I only did $500 worth of work to my buddies car haha.

Also, my Uncle has been doing some remodeling work at a near by military base and they are replacing all of the A/C units in these motel/hotel rooms they have on base, so I ended up getting 2 of those "Hotel style" A/C/Heater units to go in the shop, and with the extra money I made selling the Spirit I'm ordered insulation, and a 24" ventilation fan.

Still have plenty of work to do, still have to hang my cabinets and shelves and peg board, continue building shelves, but I'm making progress.

Lucky! You got to build a steel shed. I live right on the edge of town and the "building code" banned these puppies 10 years ago. I had to build a traditional, stick frame(which cost much more and less space)

Anyway, very nice shop. Even a lift. I am officially jealous.

Interesting that they can just "ban" a style of shed/garage.

But yeah, I'd be SOL if I tried to build a Pole Barn this big, probably cost at least twice as much.

Exactly. I paid just what you said: TWICE as much for a slightly smaller building... ouch right? Yea, townships can be a little like the Brown Shirts. Send a guy over and rough you up for talking about steel buildings 'round here LOL jk.

My issue is finding an affordable house with a large lot where we live here in NorCal... it's not cheap even in the Sacramento suburbs. We hope to be able to buy something next summer but prices are jumping quickly around here. My dream garage looks a lot like this one, and I hope to have one like it one day.

Some people might call this overkill, but I'm a sucker for numbers, and results, almost like a dynoing a car, I like to see real world differences from changes I make, and not just a "seat of the pants" assumption.

So, I ordered 2500sq feet of Double-Bubble Radiant Barrier to go in the shop. Given the air space behind the perlins, and the R value of the bubble insulation I'm hoping to achieve an R value of around R10, plus limiting radiating heat transfer from the walls and roof, which cannot be assigned an R-Value.

I wanted to see how much difference the insulation actually made, so thanks to my work I was able to snag a temperature/humidity data logger that I left in the shop for about 10 days gathering data, and comparing it to the current outside temperature/humidity.

The results were about what I expected, if you're interested, here is a snapshot of 4 days. To simplify the "Delta" sections are the difference between what it was outside, and what it was inside the shop.

I also bought a 20" Ventilation fan to help circulate air through the shop. It was a bit expensive ($300) but I was really focusing on finding one that was quiet and had louvers, this one is rated at 3000CFM and 65db, so it was the quietest one I could find, and should change out the air in the shop every 4-5 minutes.

Lastly I managed to get 2 7000BTU PTAC units (Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners, AKA - Hotel Style AC units) for free from my uncle who was doing some remodeling in a hotel. They are probably a little weaker what I'd prefer, but for free, I can't complain, and I can always upgrade to larger units in the future.

Excited to see the difference the insulation and fan makes, on top of the AC units, I'll be sure to update the thread when I get it all installed.
