Hey guys, a friend of mine is selling his 96 gsx and I've been going back and forth on whether or not to buy it. It's a 96 with a 97 conversion (front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and the larger rainbow shaped wing) it's got 150k on the body, and 110k on motor. He recently replaced the head gasket, he said its running good and not overheating but it is running rich. It does have a small patch of rust on the back/bottom driver side of the hatch. Other than that I am not aware of anything wrong with it. I have been pretty busy lately so I havent had a chance to drive it. He said he would let me have it for $2,200. Im wondering what you guys think. I would use it as my daily driver. Maybe add some mods but nothing extreme, maybe exhaust and cai. I do drive 80 miles round trip to work and back about 4-5 days a week. Sorry about the super long post but i wanted to get everything in.

Not a bad price from an AWD car. I would chose the 2g over 1g just styling preffs. Mileage is not too bad.. Just give it a once over real good, check all the fluids, and make sure the boost is holding at 14psi if its a stocker.

go for it,good price for a running awd 2g, pop hood and check strut towers for rust!!!!!!!!!

I guess it already has a cai and exhaust, not sure if it's cat back or turbo back.

I was just reading through my texts and what not, he said the o2 sensor needs replacement and the headlights don't work, he thinks it may be the switch.

Here are the pictures i have of it. Its missing part of the skirt on the driver side. And the hood/fender dont quite line up with the headlight.

As a daily driver for commuting 80 miles back and forth each day, I would go with something else. Yes, DSMs are awesome and they're fast when you mod them... but you need something very reliable to make sure that your income stream doesn't stop. I would go with a Honda or some other type of 4 cylinder that has lower mileage 80k-120k ... Don't get me wrong. You would love the car. It's fun. They're great cars to learn about... but I would get a reliable daily, and then save up for your project car.

Well i have a honda accord right now. I would be going back and forth between the cars. Almost like they are backups for eachother if that makes sense.

Im covered on that department haha. Im getting mixed responses about picking it up.

If you have the cash, have an actual DD, and want a dsm then why not. 2200 is pretty cheap for any car. It will probably be as good as any other car with over 100k on the clock and less than $3k from the wallet. Proper maintenance, a good cleaning, and a once over to make sure everything is working should be good.

Things I would look for is rust since it's a northern car. Strut towers and around the rear suspension. Has anything suspension wise been replaced? Weird noises when driving. I would look under the dash and engine compartment for any hack job wiring that could lead to problems later. You need to find out exactly what has been done to the car mod wise as well and if it was done proper. Find out what you can about the previous owners. For a quick production vehicle you know it was run hard at least some and any indicators of if it was abused/neglected.

BTW I think in the pics it looks ok. The front end needs some tweaking to get the body lines to match up right but looks ok. Thats just minor tweaking. Wax it up and buff it and :thumb:

stock boost level I think was around 14 psi. but then again it might be around 12.5. Been a while since I had my 95 gsx... I suggest spending a few dollars on a decent boost gauge, this way you know how much boost you're really pushing. You can get a air compressor with a regulator and set it to 14 psi, tap it in to the pipe after the turbo j pipe. Block off the end of that pipe with a rubber cap and hose clamp from lowes, home dept, (plumbing area) etc. In fact you could drill and tap a hole in that cap if you have some sort of reinforcement behind the rubber part. Rotate the engine by hand at the crank (clock wise) until all the valves are closed, then apply 14 psi or so, and listen for any leaks in your pipes, hoses, or manifold area. This will help you minimize any boost leaks, and make the car run like it's suppose too. Might cost you a little bit of time (few hours) but it will be worth it in the long run.

Since the car does have a 3inch exhaust and a cai, will that hurt anything without having anything done to the ecu? Maybe that's why its running rich?

I doubt that would cause that much of a problem. Those just make the car breathe easier. If you suck air in with your hand over your mouth until your lungs are full is the same volume of air if you didn't restrict the air flow with your hand and filled your lungs up. It would just be easier. Now if you mix in a certain ratio of fuel to that air either way it's the same volume of air either way so it would require the same amount of fuel to make the same air fuel ratio.

Look up causes of the car running rich. O2 sensor bad, boost leak, exhaust leak, bad Maf, etc. My bet is a bad O2 sensor like the guy said and/or possibly a boost leak.
The rear o2 just monitors the cat the front o2 is the important one.
