I have a contact with a company that could make clear lenses for the 1992-1994 dsm.

I am trying to find out how many people would be interested. If there is a large enough response I could have them made.

I also need to know what you would be willing to pay. Remember this is just the clear lenses, not the whole light assembly.

The company has a 50 set minimum and then there is extra cost to make the mold.

Id take a set of lenses in a second! Ive got the black housing lights now, but the lenses have visible lines through them that resemble cracks when the sunlight hits em just right.

You dont have a few better pics of the black housings either on car or not do you?

There arent tooo many of us that even have a set of clears or black housings.

Count me in. I'd probably get two sets as well :D

Will a black housing be available?

I think the black housings look killer on clear lenses. My hood flapped up the other day, new windshields coming in tomorrow & I think I'm gonna get a CF hood next month. :hellyeah:

I have a price on the mold and it is 30,000 dollars. I had no idea it was going to be that high. To get close to this amount my only suggestion is to start a kickstarter. Once we get at least 50 people saying they want in, I will start one.

Kickstarter usually has some kind of benefit. It seems like cheap lenses for you to profit from would be a good perk.

1 pair = 125
2 pair = 200
3 pair = 250

35 dollars for each additional pair, up to 10 additional.

13 pair = 600

This option would also let people do small group buys and each person could get a pair for as low as 46 dollars.

Please give me your opinion on how logical you think this approach is.

If you have decided to participate please post how many you would be buying and if it would be for a group buy. If it is a group buy, nominate 1 person from the group to post the count.

Example:

Count: #
Group buy: Yes/No

Some info on how these lenses will be made:
I am going to send the company a set of OEM headlights. They would make a mold for lenses that would fit the OEM headlight housing.

For reference, this is an example of a clear, fresnel, and blacked out sides.
I don't know how much extra the black out sides will cost but they can make them.

Okay so we could all save some bucks by doing a group buy. There is 15 people who voted yes.

If 200 is the price for 2 pairs.

I'd like to know specifically how much the black housed headlight lense will be with a black housed corner lense.

So ideally I want...

1 pair of clear lensed headlights, and a clear corner lense that match the look of the headlights in picture "clear". The ebay clear side lenses don't match the look of clear headlights.

& 1 pair of black lensed headlights, with a black housed corner lenses to match.

If the price is 30,000 dollars however, I just don't have that for headlights..

codym,

In reference to "1 pair of clear lensed headlights, and a clear corner lense", I think the best solution is to send the clear ebay sides to the lense company and ask them to make a mold in a style that matches.

I went looking on ebay and all I see is fresnel corners. To make clear corners we would need enough people on a kickstarter to pay for the 2nd mold.

In reference to, "If the price is 30,000 dollars however, I just don't have that for headlights."
The cost to make the lenses are very cheap, it is the initial cost for the mold that is huge. So by contributing to this hypothetical kickstarter you would be helping to make the mold and getting lenses out of it.

I can ask how much a 2nd mold would cost.

I asked about colored lenses and the company can make them. The colored lenses should cost near the same as the clear lenses.

You can count me in been thinking about sanding everything down some time now but this would be way better :hellyeah:

If it's not DOT approved it's probably because the clear lenses don't dissipate the light, or something stupid.

Had an officer pull me over for my switchbacks once, he was bound and it determined they were illegal until I showed him a picture of the new Chrysler 300's at night time.

I honestly would love a few sets of these headlights, but It's going to take damn near every 1gb owner off and on this site to reach 30,000 dollars in headlight sales just to cover the mold.

^ I agree. 30,000 to have a mold made seams steep. Not to jack the thread or anything but one could make their own for a fraction of the selling price. It's a great concept and all so don't get me wrong.

I know it is a lot but the lense would fit your light housing exactly because it would be made by a machine from a professional mold. I don't think you can get oem fit or durability from hand making a lense.

Also you have to think about why there is no one selling handmade lenses. It is probably really time consuming.

Sorry if I seem defensive.

For under $30 000 you can get a nice CNC mill with software. Make molds on a CNC and vacuum-form clear plastic over it to produce the covers.

But yes, hand-making two molds that are perfect mirror images of each other is very difficult. Then again, you can pretty much make a mold straight off of an existing set of headlights. Can use the method in the link above, where they use a silicone mold.
Another way would be to take a factory cover and cast it's negative form using plaster. Then from plaster one can make a positive ceramic mold and finish it mirror-smooth. Then use the vacuum-forming. PM me if you would like to discuss that some more, do ceramics for a living.

All of the things you mentioned take a serious investment of time. I was thinking of a very convenient and cheap way for everyone to get lenses. With crowd funding no one person is going to pay $30,000. Think of it as an enormous group buy.

An enormous group buy to kickstart the mold being made...hmmm. It would take 1000 dsmers at 30 bucks a piece or 100 dsmers at 300 a piece for example. plus the cost to buy one set at 125. Who will own the rights to the mold or the original, you ? Wouldnt you have to become a Freelancer on this forum and/or safe paypal fund until the 30,000 fund is complete ?
If this was a profitable or in high demand..more ebay stores would have jumped on it with variations.
I know this thread does not apply to me since i have a 91, but i couldnt help to comment for sake of curiosity.
This is a dreamy idea and will not be fruitful. You can barley get 30 ppl for 2g carbon fiber sunroof group buy and that was a mess. How many 1Gb ACTIVE owners on this forum will or care to get this mold done ???
Excuse me for being pessimistic, but we got to be realistic....
