I bought a remanufactured manual transmission for a 1999 gst from autozone. I have had no problems with it yet just wondering what the pros and cons.

I'm kinda new to all of this. I have had my get for about ten years now and just now got into modding it. I was just wondering what thoughts other people had on it. I have had no trouble out of it.

I paid about $2000 for it

How much did it cost? I didn't know autozone sold remanufactured trans for dsms.

Wooah kinda steep no??

The reason I went that route is when I put a new clutch in I forgot to titen the trans drain plug. Ran all the fluid out. I lost the plug going down the interstate. I made a plug for it kinda I just kept checking the fluid in it. My brother in law drove it to work and calls me when it will not move anymore. He wore a hole where the two big gears are at the end of the tranny. So I needed the casing.

Well I guess pro's would be that you get a new tranny immidiately, and cons would be that a budget rebuild from one of the reputable dsm trans shops would be much cheaper and probably better quality. It actually surprises me that autozone sells remanufactured trannies for dsm's.

Being that you're kinda new to all of this I'm assuming you didn't know your other options. Honestly I'd have never thought to even look at AutoZone for a trans just because I know of the other options out there. Like already stated for less than $2000 you could've bought a rebuilt trans from the big boys but what's done is done. Good to know it's doing its job and working out for you so far.

And AZ just made a killing selling you a reman tranny that prob didn't cost them 400 bucks from a third party reman vendor that they use.

Dang, 2 grand is a major ripoff for reman trannies. Even a JDM tranny, though used, are much better.

You could probably go to any auto parts store and they can get one for you through some 3rd party rebuilder for some outrageous price. Same thing with engines and cylinder heads. You can buy a remanufactured engine at/through Advance for like $2500 and a cylinder head for $550.

Anyway, the OP said they're just getting into modding it, so likely was unaware of any other options.

I would complain like crazy to auto zone and demand a refund. Try to return it and get your money back.

Shep trans still does dsm's. They don't show them on the web site though. I think he is at the point of servicing his current customers. Can't blame him 100 calls, 50 estimates, and just a couple sales out of that isn't a way you can stay in business. I have always been happy with his trans he built for me. I've had two of his. A fwd and an awd.

Some of TRE's site isn't working but WELCOME TO TRE   WE SPECIALIZE IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR

The other thing is I bought an OEM mitsubishi auto fwd trans at the local stealership for about $2300. No core charge and it was over half filled with OEM oil already.

Another option is the classifieds on here. There are a couple freelancers too that could help you out with a trans.

He will never see a refund.

You seriously think he should get a refund for buyers regret because he didn't shop around first? LOL Do you also buy your oil there, then take it back (demanding a refund) after using it for 3,000 miles because the Walmart down the road sells it cheaper?

Any motor/trans you get from a parts store is going to be pricey. Why? You're paying for convenience. The average Joe doesn't care that it's basically a factory rebuild. You walk in, order a trans, and in 2-3 days later it shows up. They usually carry a 3 year unlimited mile warranty. No performance shop is going to do that. Even your average transmission shop is going to take a few days to rebuild one. They will give you a 30-90 day warranty and send you on your way.

OP, just take it as a lesson learned and move on.

There is nothing he can do about it now. Obviously his best option would be to go though Jacks, TRE or Shep

Pros: - The transmission is NOT re-manufactured in a foreign country.
Auto zone goes though a company called Midwest transmission for their re-manufactured transmissions The facility looks clean and professional, Midwest clams to dyno test all rebuilt transmissions for quality assurance.

Cons: -The transmission is still built & rated for stock horsepower levels.
-12 month unlimited millage warranty.
- price

I'd look around the forums for HP levels people are achieving with their original
OEM FWD transmissions and expect the trans to preform similar to those HP ratings.

LOL Yeah I get you. All I was saying is they do have a return policy at auto zone and if he meets any of the criteria for return then he should return it. Has he even drove with it yet? Is it installed yet? Now yeah if he's been driving around with it then yeah you have pretty much bent yourself over on the deal.
AutoZone.com | Return Policy
We have guys on here that buy axles from them then snap them drag racing every weekend and return them for a replacement. Why? Because they offer a 100% warranty on them and honor that warranty.

I do know this, if a part fails multiple times they will give you your money back. A couple sensors I got from them did this, set of plug wires, and a friends axle. In those cases the product failed multiple times in the warranty period. All I said was I couldn't keep replacing bad parts and have a reliable DD.
