I read from a couple post that people who have bought the OBX cam gears from Ebay have had some timing issue.

Today, I was suppose to pick up my 420a from the shop but that went to shit because my mechanic is now having trouble with the cam gears. He didn't tell me the exact problem but I'm going to assume that it's the same problem I have read from other prior posts.

I really didn't want to make another post on the same topic but there was so many different answers and I wanted to get one SOLID answer that will rectify this issue.

My mechanic did say there was an idle issue and that it's spitting out a lot of gas so it may be the same issue everyone has had with these OBX cam gears.

PS. I'm never buying anything from OBX again as this isn't the first time I have had problems with this same brand.

OBX Cam Gears 95-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0L RS GS 420A - eBay (item 200533005803 end time Nov-17-10 11:16:40 PST)

That is exactly what I bought.

Did you compare the obx cam gears to the stock cam gears. Did the timing marks and dowel pin hole line up? I don't own a 420a but can you do this without disassembling too much. That will tell you if the bad idle is due to bad gears.

I would just compare the two cam gears and mark the timing marks EXACTLY as it is on the originals, If it is timed properly I don't see how you would have any problems with timing.

All this is still new to me.

I read this off one of the other forums and the person who created the post said it helped.

huafist says, "As long as the inner marks are at 3:00 (exhaust) and 9:00 (intake), then you're fine. Don't worry about the outer marks."

They have been on my engine for a year or so now. just lay the old cam gears on top of the new ones and mark them only one gear is off.

I agree, I don't see how they could be causing any problems unless the timing marks on them are different or they have more teeth or something, but as far as I know they are the exact same, but I still would have checked the timing marks on them before install.

The timing marks are wrong for the exh side the intake is fine.

Thanks, dsm8883.

Not sure what my guy did but he figured it out on his own. Going to pick her up at 12 noon today.

I had the gears, shafts, underdrive crank pulley, intake manifold, and throttle body done for only $300, I think that's pretty goooooooood.

But to be on the safe side, I'll never buy from obx again. Too much headaches man.

Success.

Got my car back yesterday afternoon and it's running real nice. When I idle, it sounds like a monster.

Time for a transmission swap now. Wish me luck.

I put these cam gears on a motor I put together for a friend. They worked fine but the timing marks seemed a little off and the first time I did the timing one of the gears was 25 degrees off. Other than that, they've been holding up find for over a year.

No. At the least go with fidanza, very affordable compared to aem, hks, etc. A header, sure... a full exhaust, why not? But a part that is critical to your engines performance and rotates at thousands of rpms... I wouldn't cheap out on that. May as well buy a used ebay turbo while your at it.

Those OBX cam gears don't get great feedback in the long run. General consensus seem to be that their products are acceptable for non-vital parts, but for something that controls mechanical timing I wouldn't cheap out on eBay cam gears.

Obx. Outsourced the intake manifold and exhaust manifold (as I was informed). which is why you hear less complaints about these as far as everything else they make. They just do not make quality parts.
