I've read several threads with similar titles but none seem to have the same problem as me... any help is greatly appreciated.

I drove about an hour and a half to pick up some parts for my car.

I was headed back to my house and noticed the car was overheating so I pulled to the shoulder and smoke was pouring out of (from what I could see with my phone's flashlight) my factory side mount intercooler.

after the smoke cleared I took another look and noticed a milky, oily substance that resembles grease around where the hose clamps on to the intercooler.

I took off my intake and checked for shaft play in the turbo and there was a little bit of play in it, but the fins still spun freely.

On the ground there was spots of clean oil, and spots of the substance I mentioned above.

I called a wrecker and had it towed to my mom's house here in the town where I picked up the parts. Tomorrow I will be able to get a better look and tear into it more than on the side of the interstate in the dark. But, if anyone has experienced this before or know what is going on let me know.

thanks in advance.

I dont have any knowledge or advice on such a thing but im sorry to hear that. Its never fun seeing your car get towed away LOL.

LOL, it broke my heart.. I'm just praying it doesn't break my wallet...

when you checked the turbo. Did you also check to see if the turbine had any in and out or side to side play?

If shaft play is up and down-side by side, that's normal since the oil pressure is the bearing for the turbine shaft.

But if back and forth, it's a rebuild or replacement due to blown seals.

How's the oil, for the milky substance sounds like coolant got into your system due to overheating and a cracked or blown HG.

Good luck - DSM

A blown turbo has nothing to do with the car's cooling system.

If it overheated first, you have a much bigger problem....likely a head gasket issue which was pushing hot coolant into the recovery tank, causing the tank to overfill and spill hot coolant into the engine bay in the area of the sidemount intercooler.

compression test to confirm its not the engine.

This was the first thing I was gonna do, had a head gasket blow on a previous dsm the day I bought it, and my temp gauge didn't work.. oil pressure gauge didn't work either. hg blew, and it overheated and by the time I noticed smoke, the block was done. This time there wasn't any smoke from the engine, and it didn't make any noises so i'm hoping the block is okay.

There was no in and out, only a small amount of side to side and up and down

The play in the shaft was not back and fort, so hopefully it's okay. There is no oil in the motor anymore, and that's what I was thinking. As soon as I saw the milky oily substance I immediately thought it was a blown hg. I'm just thinking that the fresh oil I saw may have came from the turbo and it blew out most of my oil, causing it to overheat, leading to a blown hg. The thing that threw me off the most was the substance ONLY being around here the hose clamps onto the intercooler, and that it wasn't on the hot side of the turbo....

See if you have oil in the turbo inlet or compressor. What turbo is it?

I didn't see any oil in there when I checked for shaft play, I will check again when I start to tear in to it. It is a 14b turbo.

I figured i'd blown a head gasket due to the overheating, but there was also fresh oil on the ground underneath the car and on most of the passenger side of the engine bay. It was dark and I was on the side of the interstate so I really didn't get to look much yet. I just noticed it was only around that hose. I will check to see if the substance is also in/around the tank.

THANK YOU for all of the replies. I'm slightly new to working on these cars myself so any help is appreciated. I'm getting up and around now to start looking into it and see what's going on. Again I just wanted to tell you all thank you for the help, and I will keep updating my progress on here, unless I need to start a thread somewhere else?

Wonder if that points to tired valve seals due to when you suddenly drop the throttle after a high RPM run where sudden high vacuum is the results which will pull oil past guides and with the BOV suddenly doing its thing to return back the intake pressure into the turbo-being the cold side.
