So yeah guys thought I would share this with you. Cobalt ss turbo brembo monoblock calipers 30 minute upgrade. All you need is the calipers bolts and a die grinder with a small diameter metal bit. These calipers almost bolt directly on the 2g front spindles . You need to awl out one of the factory spindle holes for the factory 2g caliper bracket about an 1/8 of an inch and then they bolt right on. You can use factory rotors like I have pictured as of right now, but you have room for evo 8 / 9 rotors which I will be doing as soon as they arrive. I figured out all of this by mistake and am very pleased with the upgrade. It literally took me 45 minutes for both sides

spose we cant post in the tech article forum yet :( this would be great for there. you wouldn't happen to have any pics of it, would you?

Evileagleawd thank you for your advice. I didn't know that I just figured to point them downward to keep from getting fluid on the finish. But now thinking mechanically that makes perfect sense because all the air would sit at the top......duh! Lol thanks

I definitely will. Does anyone know the diameter of the evo rotors and 2g rotors? Because I have another 5/8 of an inch clearance between the calipers and rotors which will allow me another inch diameter of rotor

Stock 2g GSX'99 is equipped with:
FRONT:
- vented rotors diam275mm (10.8") = MR389727/MR449818
- 2-piston calipers (Sigma) = MB950176 & MB950177
REAR:
- regular rotors = MB928716
- 1-piston calipers = MR129583 & MR129584

EVO-5,6,7,8,9 (possibly 10?) is equipped with:
FRONT:
- vented rotors 320x32mm (12.59"x1.25")
- 4-piston calipers
REAR:
- vented rotors 300x20mm (11.8"x0.78")
- 2-piston calipers

Front Evo 8 rotor diameter: 320mm
Front 2g awd rotor diameter: 276mm

Edit: Nice, you beat me to it.

It looks like the rotors on the 08+ cobalt SS with brembos have a diameter of 315mm (12.4")

What a neat little surprise. It doesn't shock me that some other car uses the same brake caliper mounting hole dimensions, but it's nice to know that you can throw these on with no sweat. You could probably fit EVO rotors without a problem.

Hmm? Idk if I'm going to be able to fit the evo rotors on there but I do have a guy that could machine down the diameter of the rotor to make it fit . I'll keep you posted on the outcome

Did some research and the cobalt rotors are 290mm (11.6") so it looks like I could use those as long as they're not too different from the dsm hub. I'll try a set from the parts store and see what happens.

1st off, awesome find, what do you mean by accident ?
and what does " awl " mean ? im not familiar with the term.
did the stock 2g lines fit with no issue?-thanks.

Miliman13 what I meant by accident was my buddy had these calipers laying around his garage, and I borrowed them to see if I could make a bracket to use these on my 2g. When I took my oem caliper and bracket off I lined the two mounting surfaces up and noticed that the brembos were only off by an 1/8 inch or so . So I started mocking them up and came to the conclusion that all I had to do was awl/ notch one of the holes on the spindle and they were a direct bolt on. And to answer your other question the factory line works perfectly using the brembo banjo bolt and crush washers. :thumb:

Just to be clear, you elongated one of the holes in the spindle?

I already have the j-spec knuckles for my evo brakes (if the weather ever warms up.....)

I don't think I would feel at ease, knowing that one of the fasteners holding my caliper to the car is riding in a slot.

The rotor the Cobalt uses is 12.4" in diameter, the problem you'll run into is that to use the cobalt rotor the hub is 5x110. We run 5x114.3. I did find the calipers on RockAuto for $105/caliper including the core charge. You're gonna need to measure what size rotor you need to run because the spacing from the hub center compared between the Cobalt and a DSM is going to be different. But this is definitely an awesome find!
