I have a 1998 eclipse GSX 5spd, I was trying to separate the axle from the hub and ended up messing up the threads on the very end of the axle where the nut goes on. I was wondering If anybody could give me advice on replacing the driver side axle. I have tried searching for a write up but could not find one. I was wondering where the axle came off at on the other side. Thanks in advance for any help.

Agree with you on the order of how things are done. I have used the backwards castle nut trick for years without damage to any of the vehicles I've worked on. If his shaft is seized on the hub that bad then a dead blow hammer isn't going to help much. You need surface area and mass.

I made my post unsure of where the Original poster was stuck at.
From what I understand you are unable to separate the axle shaft from the intermediate shaft. I have not come across the before so I'd recommend what was said about about rotating and taping it with a hammer where the cup meets the intermediate shaft. Hopefully it will ease out unless some splines slipped and are bounded up.

Op had a question about leaving the boot and fixing it from there, you could but a new axle shaft is only 59-80 dollars and that worth spending rather than rebuilding.

Anyone have any tricks for getting the lower control arm loose? I have the nut of but can't get it to move at all. I've pryed, I've beat and I try ed using the jack to change the angles but have had no luck. Soaked everything in wd40 and letting it sit till tomorrow.

Are you talking about the ball joint? where it connects to the knuckle?

Hit both sides with a hammer at the same time and it will pop! Not the eaisest way but it sure does work. Also hitting with one hammer works too. but I've learned the 2 hammer trick to work faster most times! You can also by a ball joint fork, just be carful not to rip the boot. You don't even need to take the lower ball joint off to remove axle! Only tie rod and the bottom fork for the strut. Oh if it's the pass side you have to take the sway bar link off to get to bolt better. Other than that it comes right out just move the whole spindle assmebly over and push out axle.

I can't picture the other 2 in my head. I'm sure it will make sense when I see it. Thanks all info is appreciated.

Still haven't gotten it out. While trying I noticed the carrier baring bolt that goes into the motor is broken off inside it. Not sure what to do now.
