Awesome! Its all about QC. A turbo is not a nuclear reactor or a RR jet engine, its a damned turbo.... Not THAT complicated. Just a few components but the tolerances must be on and the materials must be decent. Thats all you need for a good quality piece. Maybe, like you said, their qc is getting better. Who knows. If i wanted a little 16g i might get one for shits n grins,. well... no who am i kidding LOL. Id buy the real deal.

But hey, glad its working out for you bud.

Pretty stange that basically we only have BW, holset, garrett(and fp), MHI to choose from. All other mfrs get slammed as being junk. I find it hard to believe there arent more companies that can copy a design and do it right.
I bought a turbo off ebay once when trying to go turbo on a 420a. It lasted less than 1 mile so needless to say i went with something proven(atleast to some people, others swear PTEs and COMPs are shit smh)

Wow. Would have never have thought this thread would still be going. So happy for ya my man. That's awesome!! Keep us posted!! Hell ya for E-Bay Turbos!!! DSM BABY!!!

Yeah I've had two, both of them were free. First one failed within 8,000 miles, second one which I have now(different car, oiled properly) is dying a painful, oil-spraying death with 6,000 miles on it. I'm taking it off soon as the 14B comes in.

Avoid at all costs. It's not worth costing you your motor. If the turbo shits the bed it's going to put metal scraps all in your engine and oil supply. Just invest in a used 14B, and spend the $200 to convert it into a 16G or 20G. I've had eBay and authentic MHI 16G units...the MHI ones spool faster, hit harder, and pull better. They are worth it, don't cheap out.

Is it even worth it to get all the pieces you need for a 16g conversion for a 14b? I mean, you might as well just find a used 16g and rebuild that. Having the CHRA machined, the compressor housing machined, a 16g OEM compressor wheel, the 16g OEM rebuild kit.. all to use a 6cm exhaust housing that will run out in the top end.

ick.

If you get a 16G rebuild kit, you don't need the CHRA machined. And Kinugawa sells compressor wheel and compressor housing(pre-machined and ready to go) combos for less than $200 shipped to your door. Keep the eGay turbine housing because they are actually closer to an 8cm housing in flow, put the 14B CHRA in it, slap in the 16G rebuild kit that converts it to superback, and go. :)

I remember a few years ago when the 16gs were super rare. The price was insane and everyone had to have one asap. Things have changed a lot. Now you see em all the time for way cheaper. No need for anyone to go ebay on a 16g, you dont even save THAT much money really.

I had one experience with an ebay turbo on a 420a turbo. Lasted maybe 5 miles. IDK, could have been too much oil pressure but i remember being very careful about the feed, drain, restrictor. Didnt matter. 250 bucks up in smoke instantly. Found that old thing in a box recently and threw it in the trash. Early spring cleaning

Kinugawa, eh. I thought they were of fairly equal, but slightly better than eBay quality. Do their compressor wheels explode and their turbine housings still melt?

meh sounds like there's options available.

Just make sure you trust the parts that are rotating at 80k-100k rpm, and you won't have to junk an intercooler because it's got 5 grams of shrapnel in it.. (or your oil supply)

This information is wrong. The chra for the 14b is meant for a 14b compressor alone. The recessed lip for the compressor wheel is not large enough for any wheel larger than a 14b, thus necessitating the need for machining. It's not as simple as swapping in a superback oil plate and going. The diameter is about 3mm smaller than a small 16g compressor wheel if I remember the exducer specs correctly.

If you get a 16G rebuild kit, you don't need the CHRA machined.

A 16g/20g rebuild kit will give you the superback seal plate, but the bearing housing itself still needs to be machined for the larger exducer of the compressor wheel. You also need to consider when converting a 14b that many of them have standard threaded turbine shafts. I wouldn't use one of those on a bigger turbo as they are known to back off, destroying the turbo. Even if you get one with the reverse threaded shaft, most old 14b turbine blades are in less than perfect shape with chipped or bent edges, etc.
