I'm switching my '92 6-bolt to an external oil cooler with a '90 housing.

How do you guys usually block off the nipple on the main water pipe (by the pump) that feeds the stock oil/water cooler? I'll have a similar issue where the other pipe joined up at the thermostat housing, but I think I can just plug that.

I was thinking about welding an NPT or AN fitting on it and using a plug to be safe...but I could probably just clamp a rubber nipple over it as well.

What about an earlier/different water pipe that is the same except for that water outlet?

Thanks as always

You get a water pipe from a car that had an air cooled oil cooler.

Which one though? Is the water pipe off of a '90 the same except for the outlet to the oil cooler?

It looks like I'll be breaking in the stroker with the E316g, so I'll still need the other outlet for the turbo cooling, at least temporarily until I go with the HX35.

dood, you've been a member for almost 2.5 years and have over 1000 posts. Have you failed so hard at the internets that you STILL don't know how to search?

I searched for "Waterpipe" and got this....

And since I got my hazing out of the way, you have to use a 1990 water pipe to rid yourself of that nipple, unless you weld over it.

Well, I've done it 2 ways.... The first being to clamp the rubber hose with a block off stuck in it. These always fail at the worst possible times and leave you over heated and trying to fix a hot coolant leak right when you need to be at work, home, the misstress's house etc...

The second (and maybe 3rd ways) are to A.) cut the nipple down short, then clamp it shut with vice grips and weld the 2 edges together, or B.) Weld a fitting to it that you can install a threaded cap on (such as an -AN or NPT fitting) I usually do "B" sop i can have a spare water fitting for cooling the turbo, then i'll use method "A" on the bacl of the water pipe where it once fed the TB's little coolant/idle/PITA thing :LOL

But what ever you do, don't choose method "1" That one has screwed me over more times than i can count and it's only the lazy way out when you think about it. That is unless it was done as an emergency repair to a leak that you had to fix in a hurry, but should not be permanent either way IMO.

Now that's some funny shit right there, i don't care who ya are LOL LOL no offense to the OP, just the wording had me rolling

junk yard. look for the 90 laser turbo, or talon. ive got a couple of those water pipes laying around without that stupid nipple. and for some reason, the guy that had my 90 tsi before me had put one of the water pipes with the nipple on it for somereason. f'in idiot

"dood"... I did search (for "modified waterpipe" and "modified water pipe", which was my actual question). If I had of found the answer I was looking for, I wouldn't have posted the question. But thanks for being an ass and pointing out the search function for newbs that may read this in the future.

Thanks Glenn... that's exactly what I was looking for. You happen to have a source for the fittings you welded to that nipple? Got a feeling I'll have a hard time finding any '90s around here to scrounge one from....haven't seen one yet during outtings to junkyards as a matter of fact, so I'll probably be modifying mine.

TO be honest i usually go to my local hydraulics and pneumatics parts supply house (people that make lines and stuff for bobcats and dozers) and they have just about any size of -AN and NPT ports, plugs, and caps in stock and made of either nickel plated brass, plain brass or steel. I get the steel for welding to the pipe.

When i need them in aluminum i go to the local circle track car shop. They usually have everything in -AN that you could want in Aluminum, also a good source that the circlle track people don't seem to know about but have in stock is to check their "power steering" section for those oddball weld on fittings or half fittings of an -AN size in steel.

Those are my 3 best sources (2 being in 1 LOL )

best of luck and remember that pipe is steel so you can even MIG weld it if you want.. I just TIG everything i can becaue it's pretty... but i know a lot of people who think that pipe is aluminum and bring the wrong nipples for me to weld on...so i typed this as a "just in case"

That was a good "just in case"... I had forgotten about it being steel (since it had been painted in cast aluminum silver when I bought the car a few years ago), and was thinking aluminum myself :)

You got a phone yet? :) I have a great idea I need to get you involved with, but I hate trying to type that much detail LOL

Actually I do, Just got it 2 days ago and finally got my phone book out of my old one (thank god for weird ass USB cables and the places to buy em)

Anyway, shoot me a PM and ill send you a number to hit me up at tomorrow afternoon. I"m working all morning plasma cutting some 3/4 inch steel then i have to meet with a home builder about my painting business so i can hopefully get some of my guys that have been layed off back to work (and get my bills caught up on) but i should have a little time around 6PM or so to chat....

Oh awesome! God, I was thinking it was aluminum and I had no idea where to bring it to have a nipple welded on. I brought it over to a shop and they brazed it from what they told me which actually turned out visually well. I had to have my dad help me out and try to bend the nipple (it was way off) by heating it with a torch, but it got to the point where the filler metal melted and the nipple just came off.

Since it is steel I could pretty much bring it to a muffler shop and have it welded back on then no?

I also tried searching for modified waterpipe threads. I would like to find out what the thread pitch is inside the port for the turbo coolant line on the water pipe. I would like to put an AN conversion fitting on it so I can put a braided hose on there instead of the bent hard line. Anyone able to help me? I saw JNZ tuning has several different types of conversion fittings depending on what kind of threads it has. NPT, metric, etc.

It's M16x1.5 inverted flare, but a plain M16x1.5 will seal with a crush washer on the face of the port.
