t-case is from the same car as the trans. The rear is also from a 96 but i've also tried a rear diff from a 95 auto which I swapped the gears in and it made no difference.

sp222 or sp2221 (hard to make out if there is a 1 or not)

I was told that '95 models had a different spline count than 96-99 since I'm gathering parts for the swap on my Spyder. I got the entire rear set up from a 95 as well so will be getting parts from the same year. Unless I buy a parts car that has everything already.

Well one of the tranny guy's local to me thinks it could also be a bad intermediate shaft tapered roller end bearing. So I will be checking that too. Just curious, if I pull the end case off the tranny only the 5th gear syncro will fall out correct?

axles or driveshafts man... probably more so the axles.. if you can get your hands on some different ones i would try that. everything you described points to those and especially since you had one without a bearing in it completely LOL

Axles should be fine, unless the drivers side is bent but i've looked at them while the car is in gear and it didn't wobble..
Will give it a try tho if the good driveshaft does nothing.

You need to physically grab the axle and move it, up/down, in/out. It shouldn't have any play. The fact that you were missing a roller bearing off the one side leads me to believe there's an issue with that axle as that will wreak havoc through that inner cup.

I said I physically took them apart. I did that because when I was grabbing and shaking them they did have movement, slim to none now.

What if you temporarily go back to FWD by removing the transfer case and driveshaft? Just a thought

Don't want to do that/ can't do that without having a welded diff in the trans or a VCE (which I don't have and just swapping driveshafts would be 100X easier)
Car would just rev and not go anywhere.

Well I swapped driveshafts with a known good one and it helped a ton but still does it badly. Horrible going uphill. Going to be checking the trans and t-case.

T-case is good. No play besides in/ out on the output shaft that goes to the t-case from trans. Going to get a new front drivers axle (outer) and if that doesn't do it I will get the pass side as well. If it's neither of the axles I will be looking deeper into the trans.

Well guy's I think I got it figured out.
Took the axles out of the trans and started it up. put it in gear and reved it up through 3rd and it started to feel like a wobble or imbalance. This leads me to believe it has something to do with the tranny. Going to be removing it and taking it apart to check clearances and for loose/worn parts.:notgood:

Glad you got it narrowed down at least. Bad intermediate shaft maybe?

Yea me too.. Just sucks it's the trans, Going to put my fwd trans back in and either get a new trans or see how much it will be to fix this one.

So I got the AWD trans out and the FWD one in. I want to take the end cover off the AWD one, is there a trick I gotta do to get it separated?

No 91-96 have the same, 97-99 are different

thats only 90% true, they have some that are interchanged on the 96 and 97's mostly the 96 though could have the earlier one when they were still using up the left overs. Mitsubishi did that with most things on our car that they changed.

E: If you havent checked this out yet to help you taking the trans apart here's the vfaq: http://www.twingles.com/ideck/rebuild3/dretranny.htm

I've never heard or read that, but I could see how that's possible.

Thanks for the Link! I was looking for one for a 2g awd trans but couldn't find a good one.:thumb:

I have no idea where you heard this, but that isn't true. You just have to look at second digit in the code:

W5M33-2-NPZT 95-96 Eclipse AWD 5spd mfg 3/94-6/96
W5M33-2-MUZT 97-99 Eclipse AWD 5spd turbo mfg 7/96-end

P - is the "early" front diff ratio, so it can work with 91-96 transfer case
U - is the "late" front diff ratio, so it must use 97-99 transfer case.

He clearly has 95/96 tranny.

I can't believe that you were missing a 1/3rd of your CV joint and it wasn't the cause! OMG

If changing the driveshaft made a difference, I wonder if you properly located your carrier bearing mounting points? I just weld my studs on and I am really hoping they are OK :)

Well I finally got around to looking more into the trans.
Pulled the end cover off and the 5th gear/syncro and intermediate gear both had some side play. No in/out play.
Lots of tiny silver metal shavings inside as well.

UPDATE: Put all 10 new bearings in the trans and it's very tight. Took it for a test drive and it is still vibrating!!
Going to try to find a 91-96 t-case that I can test out to verify that it's not that. Other than that I was thinking; flywheel or driveshaft hangers off by a tiny bit.
