I pulled it out from the bottom on my dsm jacked it up, pulled transmission off axles and me and a buddy pulled that bad boy out, removed the head, intake and slid her out did that twice now but bought a hoist whew that was a investment because used that thing more than I wanted on my cars.

Remove axles, strip to short block and transmission.
Jack front end up, remove transmission, drop to floor. Remove out front of car.
Drop short block, remote out front of car.
Use cardboard to ease pulling it out.

We built a large saw-horse type deal (cost = $15) that went across the front of the bay laterally just so that we could lower and raise each easily using a couple pulleys. Also makes transmission alignment much easier on reinstallation if you get it balanced nicely (and stop it from rolling over).

Call your local parts store (Autozone, Advance, etc) and see if they have one. Usually, you can rent it free, as long as you put down a deposit. They treat it just like any of the other loaner tools in the store.

If you have the time rent one but at harbor freight got mine for 100 bucks helps when changing the clutch too. I did the under car pull when a few years ago when I didn't have money for hoist as a last resort.

There are a couple of guys in the area that would possibly help you pull the motor and bring over their cherry picker. PM my dad DSMspickdad and either ask to borrow ours or see if he will help pull it. Also post up here in the KC area forum and see if any one has one closer to you. Brianwheat has one but I don't know his location off the top of my head.

But to your question. Yes it can be done with a floor jack out of the bottom of the car.

Short block is like ~150lb, heads about 75 I think fully loaded. It's surprisingly easier to handle than you'd think. I would carry a full shortblock in a plastic tote. I'm no small guy though. First time I pulled mine out my brother and I just looped the chains through a steel pipe and just picked it up and out.

Note: This is by far the meathead way to do it. A cherrypicker is the proper and safest way. In hindsight alot could have gone wrong the way we did. That's my disclaimer.

First engine I pulled... Was shade tree style

A tow strap looped over a tree branch, and a come along was used to hoist it out.

Just make sure you have a good branch to tie off too.

I'll search around my area and see about renting one but I do have a couple buddies that are stronger people. I really want to get it out in one piece but pulling the transmission first is what I'll probably end up doing. Thank you guys for all your input.

Some more food for thought, I work as a process engineer and hear about hand injuries pretty often. One I remember hearing was a guy was working on a valve. He had all the bolts out but one, and the valve was tied off to the side - something like a 12" valve. The tie broke and he lost 3 fingers.

Do your buddies, and yourself, the courtesy and just get a picker. Seriously.

If not, please set up live youtube feed :)!

Haha. Yea, you're definitely right.

I would imagine most shops drop engines(no matter the make) from the bottom. If i had a lift and one hell of a nice shop i would be taking it out thatta way.

But, i have a 1 ton cherry picker and it does the job well enough. Ive only pulled a 4g63 3 times though. Most guys on here have probably done it over a 100 times. Id like to hear how guys with lifts remove engine though.

Wish you were a bit closer, I would load up the 2 ton hoist I have access to and bring it over and let you use it. But really you could get a couple of guys and pick it up & remove it that way. Me and another guy picked up and moved a long block sbc 350 (one on the front of the engine and one on the back), so I would imagine a 4g63 would be a touch lighter. LOL

Without the transmission attached of course.

I didn't have a hoist the first time I pulled my engine. I did it be my self as well.

I wasn't In a hurry so it may or may not work for you but this is what I did:

Took everything off that I could, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbo, downpipe, throttle body, Intercooler piping, radiator, AC components (I was deleting this anyway).

Now you can take the head out.

Next I would take off the axles. Well I would remove the things to get to the axles then remove them both. Then I would out one jack supporting the engine via the oil pan and one jack supporting the trans.

Remove the cross member going front to back (my car is 95 gsT, may be different for yours)

Remove shifter cables, any other little odds and ends in your way preventing you from easy access and disassembly. Remove trans mounts, side, rear, and front. Then unbolt the starter and take it out. Take off 5 trans bolts holding it to the block. Then wiggle it off while maneuvering the trans off the block and making sure not to make it just plop off and fall to the floor. Once off you can start on the block.

I used both jack to support it and I would remove the last mount and I lowered it very slowly.

Also my car was high enough in the air I was able to pull it out from under the front of the car.

And Wolla, it's all out without a hoist.

Hope this helps.
