The 68HTA is basically a billet 18G. You're never going to get far on pump gas with any turbo using a TD05H turbine.

Definitely won't be the Black.

Figure you'll need turbo capable of 52-55 lb/min to make 450whp on pump gas without meth in order to keep from melting things down. Unfortunately you can't have a quick-spooling DSM bolt-on pump gas turbo that is capable of 450whp....it just doesn't exist. You have to be able to sacrifice something:

- You can have a 450+hp DSM bolt-on turbo that spools fast, but you're not going to get away with running pump gas. (Example - FP 71HTA)

- You can have a quick-spooling turbo that works great with pump gas, but you're not making 450+whp. (Examples - Evo III 16G, TD05H 20G, FP 68HTA)

- You can have a 450+hp DSM bolt-on pump gas turbo, but it's not going to spool fast. (Examples - Bullseye S256, Holset HX35/HX40, FP DSM 76, Green XL, Red)

^ Pick one. :p

I knew Justin would chime in :)
I would be interested in seeing some dynos of the FP DSM 76 or 71HTA's.
I think he can get very close, if not to a satisfactory level of power with the Black.

I figure a 2.3 should help spool things a bit faster than a 2.0 would.

Definitely true, however like Justin said, a stroker will feature lower RPM redlines, so although it can boost quicker, total advantage of that boost may not show right away. (That may not be worded like it is supposed to be but hope it makes sense?)

Forced Performance Turbochargers: DSM Green XL

Honestly, now that I've seen those I may withdraw the DSM76 / Green XL as a serious contender. Under 400hp on a Dynojet at 25.5psi on pump gas while spraying meth (which was apparently required to get above 22psi) is nothing to be proud of after shelling out $1400 on a new turbo.

Nvermind, missed the post about you wanting 450whp. The 3786/94 would both be overkill. But they would indeed be very pump gas friendly. Justin is mythical all seeing all knowing GOD of forced induction. Let him tell you.

PTE 6466? Ive heard great things over andover about that turbo. True, its a big boy but the spool on a 2.3 wouldnt be that bad.

edit2: Just in case you decide you want more: Look in the classifieds for about the best deal EVER on a 3794 T3. Guy is asking 1750 shipped and its never even been bolted up. I hope this guy doesnt sell it actually cause im so close to buying it.... Just thought id point that out.

Ah! Thanks, was using my phone :ohdamn:.
Yes I completely agree. Dollar for performance I can't see why either the 71HTA or Green XL are worth it really.

My vote for a 2.3: Big t3 hotside. 37 series, 86 or 94. Maybe a 35 but i would still ditch the mitsu flange. Wont have to hit super high boost to come up with big pump gas numbers on a 2.3.

My only concern would be his Budget? IMO lots has to change to make that happen, let alone cost of entry? I mean when you start from scratch it isn't as bad...

If you weren't so hellbent on staying DSM bolt-on, the HY35 is totally capable of your goal.

^ For those who can't view the Link forums, it's a 2.4L Evo which made 566whp/525tq with a HY35 running pump gas, no meth injection, and tuned by Link with a 2G ECU. Runs 10's on street tires.

I am thinking that if I am going to start from scratch it might just be better to go T3, more specifically the 3076. I can get a good tune on pump and a nasty tune on e85, a set of fic 2150s, double pumper and go from there. The 3076 sure looks impressive. I won't opt for that ceramic coating though, that shop rubbed me the wrong way.

Justin while I won't argue with you because you know much more about this than I do but don't you think that writing off the 73 and 76HTA because of one dyno result is a bit quick. I know that on paper and real world results can vary greatly but with that being said those numbers seem incredibly low and not what one should expect from that turbo.
Just curious on your input more than anything.

I orderd my turbonwith ceramic coating, makes me second guess. what happened?

Well this is all according to memory....for starters I was contacted by him and he said he wanted to do all of my coatings for free as long as I would kind of advertise for him. I agreed but stated that my car was still in Cleveland and that it would be a while before I got it back. I was asked how long it would be and I said that I did not know and that Ron had full control and that was fine by me. Ron Shearer and I are friends and he has my full confidence and cooperation. He said that was fine and to send the parts to him when I could. I got the car back about two months later and informed him that I would be sending the parts and was told to go ahead. I was then told he would no longer coat them for free as it had taken to long. I said I would pay for them but I should receive some type of discount as they were in the mail. Remember we are talking about some rather large/heavy parts so shipping was not cheap. I was told that there might be something he could do. i think the end result was a savings of like $50. I found the coatings to be so so in rearms of quality. I will now only have Swain do my ceramic and I use Justin at detective coatings for powder coating. He is in VA now, he used to be about an hour or so from my house but that will not deter me as his work is first rate.

Apparently FP was proud enough of that result to publish it on their site.

I wasn't as concerned about how low the numbers are as a whole because dynos do indeed vary; I'm more-concerned with the fact that the user needed meth injection to get to 25psi on pump gas while continuing to make power. That definitely shocked me a little.

Are you talking about a dsm housing or a t3?

Great info!

If you're committed to the HTA76, I'd look into a 3576, which uses the larger 35r turbine wheel instead of the 30r. Spool difference is negligible, and the bigger wheel will support a 2.3 on pump gas much better.

Your talking about FP's coating offerings right?

We've had pretty good luck with our Auto 2.3 liter and Dual BB DSM Black.. The Black is wicked on the street with pump and 8.8cr...Knocking on 9's now in the 1/4 at the track as well..
