Looking to get into welding.
Friend of mine has access to a MIG, we've both tried it so far.

Is it better to learn on a MIG or TIG?

Ive used a TIG, when I was in tech school. Just basically creating a puddle on 1/4 or 1/8th inch aluminum and then moving it around. I never got the chance to start using rod with it. But I learned to shape the thimble(?, maybe called something else)

Mig is a good, easy place to start and learn welding. I primarily do Mig but I can do Tig aswell. I have to weld 10ft sections at a time so I go with Mig because of the continuously fed wire I don't have to stop as often.

Welded up a 50 gallon stainless tank today, 2" and 3" bungs. Tank was just over 1/8" thick and flanges were 1/4". 155amps, 3/32 308L and it welded up great! Would love more side jobs like this.

Anyone want to buy tungsten grinder wheels? $10 each.

Here's a root weld for my flux core dual shield certification test. .045, dual shield 75/25, vertical 3G position, 1.5inch mild steel.

!!!!!!!!!Just kidding!!!!!!!
Sorry

Uhm a few suggestions on Chrom. Hate giving away secrets.

It does weld just like carbon steel, but great care must be taken to have the weld area cool slowly. If not, the joint will crack or fail. I wrap a fiberglass weld blanket tightly around the joint and leave it until it is room temp. Also you can't sit around with the heat on a spot, the material will become heat soaked and brittle. Same with all tig welding actually. You have to keep moving.

There are shops that I have been to that fab easy cages, that will fail in a crash, it can't be mig welded, and it can't be cooled quickly.

If you go outside, and it is 20*, the metal is 20*

Weld it, and with in a few minutes after you finish you can watch it crack and become very brittle.

Yeah wouldnt wanna do that. Thanks for the tips, where would i find one of these blankets. Basically you just habe to anneal it?

I might just have magnus put the cage in since apparently s&w cages fit like shiot, and marco won't bend a U weld cage :notgood: ehn, if it's a few hundred more than material why not, have a few beers while it's being made LOL

Most welding supply shops have them. You can just tell them you need a simple weld blanket. The one I use is 3'x3'. So pretty small.

The real successful tube frame fab shops put an amazing amount of time into fit up of the joints and an amazing amount of detail in the welding.

And it's not really like annealing,..... A long time ago I was at a shop and we had to smack the held with a hammer all around the weld as soon as it was complete, to work out the stress from welding. I didn't really understand it all.

I think the tig fingers use a slightly different material.

You can use almost anything, as long as it can with stand heat and not start on fire.

Here is a pic of a weld blanket.
