Going to buy a rebuilt 6 bolt motor from a guy here on the forum. He's selling a motor that was rebuilt about 15-20k ago using Wiesco 8.5:1 pistons with eagle hbeam rods, bse, l19 head studs, cometic gasket, bc springs and retainers, 3G lifters

Seems like a real nice set up. I know the stock rods and pistons for a 1g are rated to handle 450-500 horsepower. My gvr4 is a daily driver and wont see anything near that. Im running a 20g on about 25 psi.

Is this motor overkill to the point where I shouldn't get it? Is a motor like this good for a DD? Or it just better insurance that something is less likely to break on me?

Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Its pretty basic actually. Its as tame as a built motor can be from every angle, so its far from overkill. Its just slightly outside of stock range.

It should be solid for ya though.

That's a pretty proven and basic setup, It should work good for you as long as it's still in good shape. I would not say that it is "slightly outside of stock range" because it can handle quite a bit more abuse than a stock bottom end obviously. IF the person does not want gold for it, jump on it!

Sweet! He said its been babied and will sell me thr long block for 1200 plus shipping.

Is that price too good to be true? Or about right for a motor like this with 15k or so?

Will/should it last as long as a completely stock rebuild?

I know a place in Cali that does factory rebuilds of 6 bolt long block for about 1600. In my opinion I would rather have something I know is new with a warranty if you're not gonna be pushing the limits of the 6 bolt. PM for contact info if you want.

I feel that is steep. I would not pay that if it were in great shape. However, that is just me. Too many risks involved for my likeing.
Read a bit more on the durability of this piston rod combo to answer more of your questions before you do anything.

It should serve you well and the stronger parts will be good insurance. All depends on what he's asking for it. The combo is not overkill at all and nothing you listed will affect the driveability as a DD.

As long as it isnt a full out race motor that slaps on start up, its a great engine. Price for the entire longblock? I think its not to bad at all.

Here's my advice:

I would want to do a leak down and compression test and take to look at the bearings on any used built motor. There are so many critical measurements and variables that need taken into account when building a motor. Was it a garage build or built by a supporting vendor? I wouldn't worry about it being built correct if it was built by JAM or Bogus. I'd still want to inspect it for that kind of money with 15-20k miles of wear and tear!

It handles about 100 more HP and compression is the same as a stock 2g.

A 6bolt with 2g pistons and ARPs would be able to hold very close to the same amount of power and abuse as this setup. That's been proven. Yes it is better but its not a huge upgrade was my point. OP was wondering if this was over kill and its not like its an I beam or aluminum rod 10.5:1 high compression motor with Kiggly race springs and kelford 294s...

It has the BC springs which are about is low as you can go, the eagle rods, as low as you can go, the old wiseco 8.5s which is as low as you can go with a horrible cometic HG which is as low as you can go, oddly enough with higher end L19 headstuds (I'd assume they are probably regular ARPs)

Its the most budget a budget build could get. So is it better than stock, yes, but not enough for the op to worry about it was my point.

^i think your wrong, that motor should hold 750hp+ but I'm with JAM, check the bearings. However standard wisecos are known to crack.

Are they BC dual springs? Or regular springs? The dual springs have the same spec as the supertech dual.

It's allllll in the tuning, thats why we have completely stock motors that have gone 9.8 &9.2.

I make upwards of 700 awhp on old weiscos at stock compression with old eagle rods. Over 20k on my long block. I also have a cometic hg which has never failed on me once with of having been put through the grind. Also, have bottom of the line ARP's no fancy super strong blah blah.
Oh, and it did not make this power once. It does it day in and day out for the last few years

Maybe you have stock blocks that make that power and take that much abuse around you but around here it does not happen. I'm saying just because they are not top $$ parts does not mean they are only smidge better than factory.

^^ Bingo but to a point, I mean if you get some random detonation dialing in a new setup at 600+ hp. I'm going to want forged to take the abuse and not melt a hole into stock pistons. Moreover, EVERYONE eventually gets power hungry.
Starts with a 16g then a 20g then a 50trim then so 60+mm turbo.

Like what has been said. OP, depending on what you can get it for is all that matters.

TSimage: Bad experience with Cometic? Ive never heard "horrible" used to describe them. They can definitely hold as much power as you throw at them. Horrible LOL. Eagle rods not good either? Ehhh, idk on that one. I think you can safely put down 750 with eagle rods. Why? Cause its been done before.

Everyone can have different results with different products, that's why we have different choices, even good things can fail.

Thats not a bad idea. Follow the suggestions of the others, like checking the bearings and doing a leakdown test. Also consider the source your buying it from and any history or reputation you can find on the seller. If you plan on keeping your car for the long haul its worth it, and if you wanna go faster thats always a plus too. On the other side of that coin you could always drive it for now and get a spare 6 bolt and build it and set it up the way you want it. If you have no intentions on going past your set up. Why bother?
