When I put an evo 8 ecu in my car, I quickly grew fond of evoscan's data visualizations. It was my goal to eventually put a monitor in my car that could display real-time data, but something that had a factory look. About a year ago when Limitless put out a pre-order for their EvoDroid, I jumped right on it.

Below are pictures and a video of the final product, along with some images of the process. It's still not done yet, but it's getting close. Next step is to put the finishing touches on the leather panel, and re-program the display with some different data (fix some layout issues, etc.)

It was actually a pretty simple process. First I removed the stock air vents and dash pieces, then I blocked off the air vent tube.

Next, I made a bracket that the small tablet could sit in.

After that, I used an old metal center-mounted gauge pod I had, and cut that up to fit my application. I don't have any welding equipment, so everything I did was basically jbweld and a dremel.

Lastly, I bought some black leather to cover everything with.

It still needs some finishing touches, but it's starting to look good.

I'm doing something similar.

CD/DVD/MP3/USB/PC/EvoScan/EcuFlash.... All in a nice little package in the dash.

Don't get me wrong, I really like what you are doing as well. I think yours may be even more user friendly than mine since I have to use a wireless keyboard/track pad. I really like your setup and think it'll look really good when you get it dialed in.

I like my placement because I haven't lost the vents and it keeps the interior looking pretty much stock aside from a head unit. If it weren't for those two details, I'd copy you.

Yeah, I got pretty close to doing something similar to yours. I really, really didn't want to lose my vents, but with the HVAC piping behind the tablet blocked off, I don't really lose any of the air movement. I was also looking for a place to put it where I could still read all the data, even on a sunny day with the sunroof open. Putting it where the vents go gave me some room to sink it in about 2 inches, to shadow it from any potential glare. But, the stock look on yours is definitely a nice plus.

Sunny days are a double edged sword for me. I have a Spyder and I don't ever drive it unless the top can be down.

Cox abele, is that one of those cd/ dvd players with a big screen or is that actually just a screen that is ran by another device? Not to sound totally stupid, im just curious.

Cox is your screen the same droid or no?

My next question would be how much modifying does it take to the radio pocket?

The link is working today btw,It blew my freakin mind..But i really dont like it just sitting on the dash like they have it mounted.

I really like both of those. Are you able to make adjustments to your ecu with that or is it a real time display?

For now it's just real-time display.

You guys should post a how too diy thread. Lol unless your planning on selling these.

Other than putting the tablet inside the vent area (which I covered in this thread), this tablet is a plug and play unit as Bud92gsx suggested. Click on the evodroid link in my first post, and you can buy one yourself.

You shouldn't need an evo8 ecu in order to read the data either. If my memory serves me right, I'm pretty sure I was able to log data with evoscan even when I had my stock 99 ecu in, but don't quote me on it. Not sure if it will work with anything older than a 97 though.

My setup is extremely easy to build, it just involves a combination of parts that must work together and some time to wire everything in nicely. I'm still working on the nice wiring part of it. I'll come back here and post my parts list when I have a little more time.

With my setup, I can log, display guages, adjust the tune, you name it. It's because of the simplicity that it's so refined. My setup is nothing more than a fancy double-din head unit and a bunch of peripheries that make it perform like a laptop. The head unit is essentially a monitor, so it doesn't have touch control unless I'm using features built into it, like the CD player, MP3/USB player, radio or DVD functions. When I "switch" it over to PC mode, I have a small wireless keyboard with a track pad built in to control the unit with.

Since someone asked, it is entirely possible to do this with a second gen. I am using a black box H8 ECU with both 98 5-speed harness and 95 auto harness. (I AWD auto swapped, using the engine harness from my parts car).To use an earlier harness, I did have to do some basic harness mods, but that's for a different thread (CAS rewire and add a pin for the flash port.)

I always being thinking on doing something like this, but using a laptop instead,. Using a double din stereo and get a touch screen (monitor) to be able to use it with out a mouse or keyboard,., Take the laptop apart and put it inside the double din, this way it will be able to use Link.

The only thing that stops me from doing this is, I don't know a lot about computers,. I can disassemble and assemble it with out a problem, but when it comes to mess with the programs on adding programs and all that staff, then I'm lost.

Other thing is that you lost the sport where you play the CD or DVD, I have to add another spot to put that on, otherwise, it will end up like tuning device and not like a tuning and a radio/cd/dvd etc.

Good job on both of you, that's dedication.

Dont let the software side stop you, i'm sure you could set it up. most computers will automatically set up touch screens, and if it doesn't, google will have a simple fix for you. about playing cd, /dvd you can actually connect an external drive to your motherboard if you just build the whole thing from scratch and have a screen with a dvd/blueray/etc. reader mounted anywhere you want. (i was thinking of doing this and having it right below or above the screen.)

E: you DONT want to start with a laptop really, the parts are more expensive and harder to take apart / put togeather. A desktop thats taken apart would work perfectly if you made new mounts for the harddrive, motherboard, and usb / dvd player.

quick question, is this type of visual display possible with dsm/ecm link ?

I have been considering doing something like this for dsmlink/music... Its most definitely possible, but you would want it to be a computer connected to a screen, like miguels' idea. It would work really easily, once you have everything mounted.

Great job, very clean i hope mine turns out this well done.

You are attempting me to do it.:hmm:

I have disassemble my laptop so many times and I'm sure I can put all together in a double din case.

Once I finish with my recent projects, I will give a try and see what happens.:sneaky:

Here's my setup in a nutshell. I don't have it finished up yet since I've been focused on other areas of my build. Wired like this, I can go full PC through the A/V input (including audio), or I can listen to anything the head unit can do naturally but bring up the gauges by flipping a switch and running the gauges through the reverse camera input.

Watch my video, you'll see my screen roll up and cover the DVD/CD/Card Reader portion of the head unit. I even switch over from listening to the radio (Outkast) to the laptop function (Audioslave).

I did fail to label the laptop in my schematic, but if you trace it, it's not difficult to find. I keep it stashed under the driver's seat and can quickly remove it from the car if I choose. It even charges when the car running, and uses DC power to operate.

I run windows 7 which has some power management functions. When I shut the car off, power is cut from the DC/AC inverter. The laptop senses this and immediately runs off the battery. With the power management options, I have the computer go to sleep after running on the battery for so long. This reduces boot time, difficulty in powering back up and saves battery life. Provided the laptop battery doesn't go completely dead, I can hit a key on my keyboard and the laptop comes back to life in about 5 seconds.

I had the same setup as you Cox, but sold my laptop during a move. Anyone have a laptop with a junk screen they want to sell me? :D
