Good afternoon and late Merry Christmas!

So on my way home from visiting family for Christmas, my car died on the interstate going about 75 mph. I pulled it over and tried to start it a few times, but it was a no go. Got it towed and soon found out the timing belt snapped. It was fairly new as well, so I do not know exactly what happened. Almost everything else on the car is new/replaced and even the transmission has 2 years left on its warranty. I know these 4g63T engines are interference engines, and so it probably messed up a lot when the belt snapped. It needed a little valve work before this happened, so now I imagine it needs much more.

Anyways... I am looking for opinions on what to do. As I see it I can get someone to help me just throw a new motor in it, or have someone help me fix the head and then fix the belt and related stuff, or just part out the car and try to reclaim some losses. I am sure several people on here have been through many blocks, transmissions, etc.. What would be the cheapest or smartest route? I just want it running, but do not want to worry about these issues for awhile. It has been an extremely stressful day, and I want some help getting this sorted.

Thank you!

you're gonna have to pull the engine to see how much damage it did before determining that. the valves are more than likely trashed, and it might've also damaged the pistons when they made contact. it's also good to TRY and find out the cause, but i'm gonna guess possibly the balance shaft belt snapped and took the timing belt with it?

Yeah I agree I was only doing maybe 10-15 mph when I had a belt snap many years ago and it trashed the valves, but I got lucky with the pistons and only put couple marks on em.

The previous owner of my Talon had a timing belt snap at 5K RPM and the pistons were just fine.... the valves on the other hand...

pull the head and inspect from there. the crank should still spin freely, and you may see a couple new impressions in the piston top. unless you broke a valve during the extra cranking, you should be fine.(ive done this) but, i have had plenty of belts brake, and im most cases the valves get trashed. my worst case, the head was trashed too. If it makes you feel better to do a tear down, then do it. +1 on the broken b.s. belt

I agree- pistons should be fine, the nicks this leaves are not too deep and they are strong enough to handle it. You will certainly see bent valves as they get hit very hard. Be sure to check for marks in the roller lifters and the cam face as they take this full force. Damage to the valve seats and head are also very possible. You (or they) will be able to see what happened when it's open- broken balance belt is almost always the case with age as it's smaller and sometimes not replaced with the main belt. Second most common is rusty rollers/idlers from a leaking water pump, and in your case it sounds like the belt was not worn out.

What you should do depends upon your skill level. With the large amount of aftermarket parts and work that has already been put into it, I'm surprised you're asking what to do! It's worth fixing. Sure you can find another used turbo car for about what you're about to put into this one, but it won't have nearly as much aftermarket toys, the transmission will be worn out, and it will still need the same basic maintenance work!

Whole replacement long blocks can be spendy- a thousand to 1500 for a JDM pull, less if you're lucky enough to find a turbo motor at the junk yard. Given how much fun you have probably been having with this car, I'd say it's time to pay up to the God of speed with an offering of grease and sweat and rebuild it the way you want it to be. If it were mine, I'd pull the motor, rebuild it and the head, do it right to support the power you're probably making with your adders- ARP all around, MLS or Cometic head gasket, maybe better pistons/rods, etc- when it's done, especially with the already rebuilt transmission, you'll have nearly a new car, and the confidence that you're running a solid rig.

Head rebuild is costly... you could get a used head for a couple hundred bucks, but how long will that one last? I did rebuild my head after my timing belt snapped.. all the valves were bent, and the pistons dented... I only cleaned up the piston tops and grinded the dents smooth... so far the pistons are holding up well. Head got all new oem valves, springs, retainers, valve stem seals, 3g lifters, rockers were good enough to reuse, had some machine work done on the head itself... cost me total 1,700-2,000CAN plus I did all the disassembly/reassembly/timing belt myself (all new belts, pulleys, and tensioner inclu balance shaft belt). a shop would have charged me more I bet. Took me a month and a half total part-time, plus it was a huge pain in the arse. On a positive note it runs so beautiful.. like new! Next the bottom end will go on me..

The price is a bit high but I did some other things at the same time like a new cam sensor, oil seals, gaskets, water pump, o rings, hoses, water pipe, some work to my turbo.

I hear you guys and I thank you for the responses. I really do want it to work out, and I do enjoy driving it. I thought about it and at the moment it does not seem like I can do anything. The car is currently at a towing company 100 miles away. They said $4 a mile to tow it to me, so I am looking into finding people to help me. I never go to crazy with the car cause I needed it to get to work to help pay for school. This may have not been the best choice of car for that, but it was one I had always liked. I enjoyed modding it and fixing it up. It has came a long way since I first got it. I plan on keeping it for now broken and waiting until I can give it real attention. It was never beautiful like some cars on here, but this one was mine. Thanks guys for your input. I think I will hold off to build it right when I have the funds after school finishes up in another year. Then I will have the free time.

Where is the car located? I may be able to help you out. A certain automotive club is scattered across the U.S. and many members would be happy to give you a tow for the cost of fuel ( yes I am a member as well).
