Recently I just had a cylinder head sent out and redone. I also plan on running crane 264 cams in it. I am now looking at adjustable cam gears to complete the head setup. Here is why:

On the car's current head with Fp2 272/272 cams, it runs really well. However when the cams were degree-ed, found the exhaust to be off by a few degrees, not really enough to effect much, but it is off. I'd like to actually be able to compensate for this with the new head combo.

So that brings me to the question as to what cam gears to go with? I haven't been able to find a ton of information out there on them, or really any solid good/bad reviews. Found one thread that stated the HKS's are made of solid aluminium and have the best fine tuning, but that was from 2002? So my question is, what have all of you been using lately, and is there any brands that stand out over the other? Is there a good reason the HKS's are like $400, when AEM can be had for about $285 and Fidanza for even less?

Thank you for any input on this! :)

I had a set of AEM Tru-Time gears on my Galant VR4, with HKS cams. They worked well. The adjusters never slipped or loosened up or anything. They go used for around $200 every now and then. Just make sure the adjuster bolts are torqued correctly at 15 ft. lbs. and you're good.

I have hks that I have used on a few cars/motors over the years. I imagine you'd be fine with Any name brand gears. When i bought mine hks and aem where both available, but aem basically just sold intakes and fuel rails at the time and i disnt know rhey were a big engieering house. They are a good investment of you can take the time to set them up on a dyno with someone who knows what they are doing. I tune my own car on the street but I have a dyno appr in February with my engine guy to do my valve timing and fine tune my boost solenoid with it.

I was using Unorthodox Racing, but they seem hard to align....I don't know why. When I had to replace the crappy SBR head, I switched to AEM. I see a lot of people using AEM sprockets that have only 3 adjusting bolts. Mine have 5, the only thing is that it would be nicer if the machined a recess for the center bolt, because the OEM bolt head sticks, out and would hit the timing belt cover.

Again, thank you! Was looking for the exact info as posted: installation, quality, problems with loosening up, ect.

New style BC went on with no issues, but they are drilled for both DSM and EVO.

You just have to make sure to clock them for the proper engine.

Now since you are a 2g, If you run the front mount cam sensor, you have only one choice, and that is AEM. They are the only ones set up to accept the window plate trigger.

I'm currently running an Unorthodox set and have no complaints about them. They lined up perfectly to the stock gears.

I do too, mine came with the car when I purchased it and there has been no need to adjust them so the only thing I can tell you is that they hold perfect and look pretty

When I built my motor I bought a set of AEM gears (believe still their current style, different version from the ones posted above). They were great except when I went to put on my timing cover, they didn't clear. When I looked into it, most running AEM's weren't running covers, which I wasn't going to do. Not sure if they have changed anything, this was 3 or possibly 4 years back.

I switched to Fidanza & haven't had any issues. I'm not a huge Fidanza fan but their timing gears seem to be good & were my second choice over the AEM with my research. The HKS ones were alright as well but I didn't like the cost & the colours for my engine bay (clear timing cover)

You are right, I forgot I have that bastard cam sensor there. Hmm, might have to think about the options here.... if it's worth converting to a different cam sensor or not.

Thanks everyone!

Like bogus mentioned, you're not running the 2ga sensor that reads off the cam gear right?

I like my skunk2's. I haven't heard of them/or even know if they're still made but I like how they have much more bolts to tighten down rather than only 3. You know, feeling of security it won't slip. I'll try to get a pic later today.

Talon dave runs skunk2

Ive always wondered which to go with but haven't decided.

I'd love hks at a fidanza price. Lol

Here's the adjustables I run, when I degreed the cams it was surprising how far off from true things were. I like the strong and somewhat stealthy appearance they have. Oh and don't forget a couple 12pt ARP bolts to hold them to the cam :thumb:
