I've heard a fair amount about DSMs I'm general being relatively unreliable vehicles, but I'm wondering if it's more about the fact that these cars are getting old now (my Laser is on its 21st year now) and everyone just wants to buy one and go fast. I've heard about people snapping timing belts andtrashing their head, but with unknown maintenance, the belt was probably gonna go due to age. I've heard of many people shearing synchros, but is this simply from shifting like an anus tart with an overpowered car with old tranny oil and slamming gears too hard? Transfer cases locking up on the highway with out any notice, when it's been leaking and running dry for miles.
In my mind, buying any twenty year old car opens the door for reliability issues, so get on the maintenance! I got lucky a few weeks ago. Alternator voltage regulator went awol, so I bought a rebuilt one and put it in. Fired my Laser up and it ran like a pile of crap. Checked compression and was around 145psi across, when cold, but turning it to top dead center and looking at the cam timing, showed the intake cam had managed to advance itself two teeth. Oh no. Got a pile of parts, changed everything and it runs awesome still. I had planned on doing the timing belts, and here comes my original question again. Unreliable or in need of maintainance after 20 years? I'm leaning towards maintenance and just not driving like a race car driver, until your ride is ready to go.

Nothing unreliable about them at all. It's the jackholes that throw on a big frame turbo with stock injectors and no tuning solution that talk shit when they snap a 10 year old timing belt. The best ones blow a hole through a 20 year old piston running a 49+ lbs/min turbo on a stock fuel system and claim the 4G63 is garbage.

Yeah as to what the others said, mines never broken down and the only issues are from age related seals and stuff. Other then that its reliable and always works. Just maintain it and it will do well for you.

Exactly.

People skip maintenance, blow money on mods, refuse to educate themselves, and drive like a 16 year old. Then wonder why their 20 year old performance machine has issues...

:hmm:

Maintenance is key on these cars. I have heard of 4g63 motors going strong with over 200k miles stock bottom end, daily driven unmolested. Then again the timing belt, water pump, plugs, oil changes go a long way on any 4g63 to live a lot longer. Bottom line DSM's are beaten to death all the time by racer wanna be's, and expected to live perfect. All the dsms i see are so unmaintained all the time, its a sad fact ! The motor is very stout and reliable when maintained, they just get a bad rep from ignorant owners.

On my first DSM I reached 220k on a stock head/bottom without any major repairs. In fact the only time it saw the shop besides maintenance/mods was when my battery shorted out the car by hitting the front strut bar.

I'm on my 2nd DSM since I sold my first one when my daughter was born. Right now I'm on 130k and I haven't had to do any repairs and I drive about 70-100 miles daily on her. If you keep up with the maintenance you should be all set to go

What everyone says. It seems that these cars attract wannabees that have no business owning ANY car nevermind a performance car. I guess the fact that the selling price has come way down into the territory of first-time buyers usually means they've blown their entire wad on the purchase of the car and have nothing left for anything else. Not even a friggin' oil change. Kinda sad really.

Best quote I ever heard on tuners was "If your going to drive it like a race car, prepare to pay for repairs like it's a race car" -Not sure who it was but good advice.

Personally I love my dsm but that goes without saying when I purchased the car the people before me touched this car in all the wrong ways so its taken alot of therapy, patience, and money to get her back to good working order.

Mine is the same way ^^^ she had all sorts of wires cut, a half ass vacuum delete, boost leaks, etc etc.

Shes been awesome for a while though, only problem is the clutch master and or slave is on its way out. I can only shift it a couple times then it loses pressure and won't engage. But I'm sure they are original parts and its about to clock 197k
