I don't do much manual welding anymore (we have121 robots that I program to weld) but I needed to put a bung on my exhaust. Its been probably 2-3 years since I have done any manual tig welding on austenitic stainless, but I think it turned out ok.

im sorry if this has been answwered , i browsed the thread but could not find what i was looking for, im looking to pickup a welder for home, i have 99% of my experience on a MIG but would LOVE to be able to TIG also and weld aluminum , i never cared much for a spool gun which brings me to my question. is there a budget welder that can do both mig and tig? ive seen the 200sx used alot in here when under a budget but i definately want to be able to mig for small/quick projects that dont require the final results to be a work of art and dont need hours of welding invested into it , i would love to stay under 1500 if possible under 1000 would be even better

Mig welders use constant voltage power suppose and tig/stick welders use constant current power supplies. If you find a machine that does both it won't do aluminum. Not sure why it is that way but it is. Also the all in ones that mig and tig don't have high frequency.

Tungsten inclusion may be a stretch because i never dipped my tungsten on this part and I always grind a flat on my tungstens. I have never seen a tungsten inclusion make its way to the surface, only get embedded into the weld where it can only be detected via radiograph. I went and looked at it and that location was a start/stop, if I had to guess, I'd say that its a crater from the stop because it looks very similar to my other stop.
 
Urban, you are probably looking for Solar 'B' flux. I get it from my local eluding supply store, it might be easier for you to order it off line.

I order a lot of stuff offline rather than going to the little stores in Nebraska LOL. Just easier for me.




The reason why E6010, but more specifically Fleetweld 5p+, doesn't weld good with some inverter machines is that the open circuit voltage, is either to low, all together, small machines like Maxstar 150 (no load)

Or the manufacturer designed the voltage under load to drop to fast and too low.
Some people say that Lincon machines weld 5p+ the best because they design their machines around the voltage droop. Is that true? I don't know........ But sa200 engine drives are undoubtly the smoothest stick machines I have ever ran ,)


So when you light the rod, it goes out after about a second or two. Restarts easy half the time. But you Can't keep the rod hot, or the puddle fluid.



And you use 6010 rods for putting in root passes in carbon steel pipe. It works in all positions great, very crisp deep penetrating, does have a lot of slag to get trapped, burns through paint/dirt/kurf, and it's the right tensile strength for most pipe joints.

Your talking like tungsten inclusion is rare LOL. And it isnt.

Ah, and you forgot that they are a major pain in the ass. Pain in the ass, definitely forgot that. ROFL

after doing my overhead test (with a cheap welding jacket) i had burn marks ALL over my left arm, it looked like i had some crazy supercharged chicken pox.. Shit was not fun.

Im no pro at smaw, with that being said. The top pass was around 85 amps the very bottom at 105 (till the breaker blew) and middle around 92ish.

This machine seemed to run a very VERY smooth arc and the stinger is uber comfortable compared to the millers at school ( they are probably ragged out )

BUT for some reason because the arc was so smooth I feel like the penetration just wasnt as deep.

Like on the millers at school these rods have a really strong arc force and it seems like its very ... uhm volatile? Like you can see the hole the rod makes in the base metal while welding..

I can tell you exactly what the 6010 welded like, just like 6013!

One more very important variable, this machine is 110 or 220, im running it on 110.

So maybe the amperage isnt quite acurate or something. But once I struck an arc it was no problem to maintain it.

6010 is a biatch to weld with. And it is tough to make it look decent.



The Solar "B" Flux kinda burns off. It isn't really thick. And if there is any residue you can spray it out with some compressed air.

No where near as bad as smaw flux LOL

It was a fantastic time and my girlfriend even loved it! Next year it's in Altana, here I come!

Those beads don't look to bad. It looks like it ran the rod pretty good.

And I bet on 220v it would have more arc force and be perfect.

i bet it would too. Although, unless im mistaken, my machine is an inverter type and the millers at school are transformer type. Would that make a difference?

Just a few items I was working on today, some stainless window brackets and an AC cobra fuel tank. a few of the mild steel hinges for a gate will put pics up of the tank once im done

Continuous all the way around? Or did you have stops and starts? I always wondered and will soon find out (6g) how to contort myself going around a pipe at one continuous pass LOL. Good job. spoon man, come together with your hands:thumb:
 
I love being a UA steamfitter, welder. I hope you guys like it too.



Believe it or not but that was a position weld. 5g.


The flange was bolted up and the pipe connected to it was the tie in.


I started at 6 O clock and went all the way up to the top with out stopping on the cap. Looked really good. And I am surprised it came out that consistent considering I had to go from a crouch to standing up whole welding.
