okay i have a eclipse rs 1996 and im trading for a 1997 eclipse gst
this is what he says is wrong with it

1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T. This car has the 4G63T motor, 2.0L automatic with aftermarket turbo. The car had timing issues and the valves were bent so a different head was put on and I could not get it to run. Hear these cars are very touchy when setting the cam timing to the crank and oil pump. May just be a timing issue. This was my sons car and he has gone off to college and I no longer need the car or have time to mess with it. The car is sold with another turbo and exhaust manifold plus some interior switches and panels. Before the timing issue the car ran great and was very fun to drive. Any questions please call, text or email.

he says it runs rough could it be the crank angle sensor or? i just want to know before i go and buy something that might be a money pit.....

thanks in advanced

Sounds like he botched the timing job and possibly bent the valves again. Does the motor turn over or does the starter just whine?

EDIT: ah just saw that it runs rough...If the crank or cam sensor is bad it wouldn't start at all. Sounds like the timing belt is off a tooth or two, which is an easy fix...unless the vales are bent.

as far as i know he said it starts runs and you can drive allite ways but he said to atleast tow it home im going there tommorow to look at it and hopefully bring it home!

but if the valves were bent it wouldnt start still right?

In my opinion it all depends on what you're willing to get yourself into. Me myself I got my car in not running order, had to swap steering column minor electrical issues and I wouldn't have it any other way due to the fact that I overcame the problems and learned a lot of things about the car especially since the motor and trans were no good and a bunch o parts missing, it really all depends on what you want. If he is willing to trade for a n/t I'd trade it in a heart bet since not many do that now a days.

It doesnt hurt to go look at it anyways. See what other things are done, rust, interior. Just check it out. If it is still mostly stock with that aftermarket turbo and doesnt look haggard as hell why not. A timing job really isnt that hard if you read carefully and take your time.

Just go look at it.. If you think its going to be too much of a headache dont go through with it.

I would not do it. Someone else's headache. If it was a easy fix he would have done it and made money off the car but since it is f**ed. He is trying to get a easy way out. Also if his son is in college and does not need the car why would he take yours. Look at the facts he changed the head and did all that hard work and now this is more problems. All that means is ongoing problems. I would so not do it.:notgood:

Or there is an issue because he didnt know what he was doing and tried without doing a little research. This issue could very well be just a tooth off on the timing..

Ive done it before.. Changed cams one time, timing belt, valve cover and cams were the only things touched. Timed it, started it. Idled and ran like ass.. Had to work though so I limped it there and back. Checked the timing. Off a tooth. Retimed it, ran like a dream.

i am wanting to do that i just have a job and my dads v10 i cant afford the gas in it i just want to make sure its nothing like a crankwalk or something like that

If you can't afford gas for a V10 what makes you think you can afford it afterwards when you have to put the car down for major repairs ON TOP of costs of parts for this car? Pass it up.

Botched timing job. Honestly the only way to go into purchasing this vehicle is to look at it like this- There's currently an issue with the most vital part of the engine, you COULD potentially be looking at a full rebuild to get this thing back on the road. It'll still run with bent valves, but it'll run rough. Depending if it did bend valves, and how bad the timing was off you very easily have punched a hole in a piston- which could lead to further destruction.

I would put money on the head needing replaced at minimum again, worst case scenario you'll need a whole new long block.
