I don't see the value in dipping a car if the paint just lasts a few years or even just a year.

What is so great about that? I see paint from the $50 dollar paint job threads that lasts longer.

I know the advantage to plasti-dip is that it can be removed easily, but say you want to use it as a LONG term fix.

How long can it hold? I also read that touch up is easy. What does that mean? Does it mean that I have to be touching up every year?

Finally will plasti dip cover cracks in my fiberglass rear bumper and fiberglass hood? I am not talking about covering uneven paint, I mean spiderweb cracks.

It will cover spider web. I used it to cover paint cracks off my front bumper. And I Just scratched my side skirt. (Slammed daily not my DSM) and taped and sprayed black square over it because it looks better and less noticeable than the scratches. Touch up is if it accidently gets scratched or messed up. I used black do it uniforms the color, if you look close you can kind of see where they scratches are. But spider cracks are different because you can't really feel them.

It will last a long time depending on how you take care of it. You are not supposed to use high pressure wash and you use a "super absorber" towel to dry it off. etc

Very interesting. What about if the vehicle rarely gets washed? Is that a good or bad thing? This is how my vehicles live unfortunately since I own too many.

Thanks

As far as durability goes like Chris_92TSi said it really depends on how you take care of it. It also has a lot to do on how well you actually paint it. I helped a good friend paint his 3kgt and we went from the dark green stock color to a complete white dip. Because it went from really dark to light it did take a few more layers to get it completely white. Anyways he has been driving it now daily for the past year and a half and has had only one small chip. The nice thing about it is that it can very easily be touched up. I assume that the amount of layers you put on affects the durability as well.

I have a small chip on my hood that is down to bare metal. So I plastidipped my hood to help keep out moisture until I can afford to buy proper paint.

Anyway, even with a big ass chip out of the paint it covers it fairly evenly. It's barely noticeable unless you are looking for it.

When you go to spray the dip, DO NOT spray it like spray paint. It will come out and barely cover anything the first coat. Keep doing coat after coat until everything is covered. If you try to get total coverage in a single coat you are going to get horrible runs.

*edit* Forgot to mention that washing the texturized dip sucks. Unless you get the prethinned dip from dipyourcar.com you will have a hell of a time washing it with out a lot of work or pressure washing. When I say pressure washing I mean very low pressure like 1200 PSI or less, don't go out there expecting to not rip your paint off blasting it at 4000psi. Personally I'd go with a regular hose attachment that produces good pressure or a Wal-Mart bought electric pressure washer that has a very low setting. BUT! Removing dip is easy and cheap to respray, so personally when it gets looking like shit I pull it off and redip it. If I were going to be doing a whole car I'd probably pressure wash it.

I would just save money for a legit paintjob. If you plasti dip your making more work for yourself when you go to actually paint it. I would stay away from cheap paint if you really care about the dsm you put all your money into but this is just my opinion.

Its been pretty durable on my rims. Didnt go crazy with prep work either. Just a good scrubbing wash, rinse, let it dry then rub it down with thinner to make sure its clean. Plastidip stuck right to it. 3 coats total. I have taken it through some carwashes. Ive pressure washed them. No problems. I used no clear top coat and they still look great after i wash them and put on a little armorall or similar.
I personally went with a real paint job but i have seen some local cars fully dipped that look great from over 15 ft away. Just dont look too close LOL

A couple months ago I saw a thread on a guy truck bed coating his entire car. Pretty much permanent but looked good if you like that murdered out look.

About filling cracks just think about the flex seal commercials. LOL You can make a DSM "commercial" of repairs in a can.
I have used plasticoat on some pretty rough window trim pieces. On my girl friends car she always parks the same at work so her 02 toyota window trim on the passenger side was cracked and pieces of black falling off. Looked like crap. All I did was cut off some of the big flakes and kept coating it until it looked good. It's held up fine.

I got bored the other day and decided to dip my 1g, I live in Cali so all I have available are spray cans. 14cans later, and I'm pretty satisfied. Before the dip, it was several shades of primer from previous owner
