Somewhere there's a list, but unless Mitsu/Diamond Star published the list themselves (which they may have, I'm not sure) it's just someone's opinion or guess. In some cases it's known that a particular designation is a reference to a competitor's model (which may or may not itself be a reference to another competitor's model, etc). There are almost certainly very few clear-cut verifiable answers to that question.

What do the initials GS, RS, ESI and Tsi actually stand for?

Well as stated above, it may be speculation unless it's published by DSM themselves. But my understating is this:
GS=grand sport
RS=rally sport
TSI=Turbo sport Intercooled or injected
ESI= electronic sport injected
GS-T= grand sport turbo
GSX= grand sport AWD

Don't want to sound like a naysayer but this question came up years and years ago and no one ever produced anything published by Mitsu/Diamond Star. However, what is known is that TSi (and ESi) is in reference to BMW's labelling conventions for their vehicles at that time (remember this is the late 80's) where the "i" (always in lowercase) stood for "injection" (as in fuel injection which was a fairly recent thing at that time). It is also known the the "T" does not stand for "turbo" since the Eagle Vision also came in a TSi version and it was never turbocharged.

You want to know the real answer to this question? There is no real answer.

No real answer? Well how about these then?
GS - granny sport
RS - rally sport
ESI - electronic slow injected
TSI - teen sport injected
TSI AWD- teen sport injected all wheel drive
GST - grand sport teen
GSX - grand sport and the "X" is like porn.
LOL

For me really I look at them like
GS,ESI,RS - non turbo
TSI,GST - FWD turbo
GSX, TSI AWD - AWD turbo

^ Well you'd be wrong because the RS badge on a Laser can be Turbo and can be AWD ;)

:ohdamn: You got me on that one. I forgot all about the ply mouth laser and 1g's. LOL What can I say I'm a 2g guy.

Ok come up with something for the 1g's
GS
GS 16V
DL
ES

plymouth
RS
RS turbo maybe RST for short
RS turbo AWD and RSTAWD

What about the base models that didn't even have a trim level indicator?

GS - Goes Slow
RS - Really Slow
ESi - Eagle's Si (like Civic Si)
TSi- Twice Si (2x power of a civic Si)
GS-t - Got Super Turbo
GSX - Got Some Xtra

YMMV.

The TSI and ESI may have originated from the Starion. I don't know of an earlier car that used them. ESI appeared on Starions when they added an intercooler for the 85.5 car. The same with Conquests (same as Starions). Starions were ESI and Conquests were TSI. In the SQ community it's generally believed that ESI = Euro Sport Intercooled and TSI = Turbo Sport Intercooled.

If that were true, explain the Eagle Vision ESi and TSi (neither of which was ever turbo). Also, the "i" in TSi and ESi is lowercase by the way. If that "i" denoted something of equal merit to the E, T and S why are the E, T and S always uppercase and the i always lowercase? There's no need to answer that, it's a rhetorical question. By the way, it should be noted that most automotive manufacturers never publish any info regarding the "decoding" of their trim codes. It certainly isn't unique to DSMs.

Well I wasn't stating this is what it is. I was stating this is what the SQ community believes it to be and that the ESI TSI badging didn't appear until intercoolers were added. Now Starions and Conquests are nearly identical except for a few body color accents. Why the different badging IDK. Maybe to seperate the brand names further.

Now, I'm probably waaay off but maybe something's lost in the translation. Wasn't the Starion supposed to be called the "Stallion"... So maybe ESi/TSi they just thought sounded European and what not. :D

LOL Even though it sounds like it, the name Starion isn't Engrish. It's supposed to be a mix between Star and Orion.

Yeah there's another unanswered question. Some say "stallion" some say "star orion". Nobody knows the real reason why it's called Starion except Mitsu.
