Replaced valve seals, still burning oil at idle

I replaced my valve stem seals less than a year ago and I am still burning oil at idle.

I have a busted exhaust manifold stud causing an external leak. Is it possible that oil could be leaking out of this stud behind the gasket, into the manifold, burning, and then blowing out the tailpipe in the form of blue/grey smoke?

I really don't want to tear into my head again. Replacing the valve seals was a PITA!
 
There is only 1 stud that hits oil on the exhaust oil, the bottom center, and that is a return port.
 
Do your leakdown test. That will tell you way more than any of us could guess. But on that note, it could be turbo seals or even rings. Turbo seals tend to leak more consistently as higher oil pressure, i.e. upper rpms, but anything is really a possibility. If you do a leak down and track it down to turbo seals that would be a pretty simple job (rebuilding/replacing turbo) that messing with rings.

In summary, get those leakdown test results in and you should then have a good path to go down.
 
Did you make sure to tap the valve seals all the way in when installing them?

I placed them over the valve using a socket and pressed them on with my hands.

I am hoping you're not going to say I need to redo the job! :/
 
I made the same mistake my first time. I caved and ordered the Euro Export tool for doing it on the head.

You need to get a deep socket on there and lightly tap them in. You'll feel when they're seated, and you'll hear it as well.

Sorry to tell you that, but you're going to have to redo it. If I were you though, I'd get the tool. If you think about what you're going to replace for peace of mind removing the head again in terms of parts, you might as well just get the tool!

Hey man, I'm having the same problem you are and I have a broken exhaust stud. I took the exhaust manifold off and the gasket looked like it had oil all over the #1 exhaust port bc of the stud letting oil leak out of it. It's the top left stud that's broken on my car. I'm still in the middle of getting it out with an easy out but I'm hoping it fixes my smoking problem. I would say try and fix the stud and get a good seal and then see if your problem still exists and do the leak down test

I have confirmed that the external oil leak was caused by the valve stem seals.

Numbers 1 and 2 valves are drenched in oil.
