When can YOU hear spool on 16g?

What kind of 16g (Small, big, MHI, Godspeed, etc)? What does the rest of the setup look like (cams, manifolds, etc)?

With my Small 16g I started building boost at around 2500rpm and would hit 20-25psi right around 3k. I also had an aggressive tune on E85 and had shimmed wastegate actuator about 1/4", but nevertheless it was an extremely responsive setup.

I am relatively stock on a evo clipped 16g. I had issues with my plugs and wires before, and just ordered ngk plugs and wires, so ill see how she does in a few days when they come in :p

"Edit: Replaced old wires with some autozone wires that I will be returning here shortly. Impatience will kill me."

Can I ask why you have a clipped 16g?And what boost your running with it?

Edit after Wes chimmend in.What Wes said +2.

The clipped turbine is contributing to the lag. Clipping the wheel will improve flow, but will reduce response/increase spool time as a result.

Good plugs and wires are a plus, but unless you were misfiring before they won't make much difference. The biggest killers of spool time are exhaust leaks, boost leaks, and wastegate issues.

It all depends on your setup. If youre running an aftermarket mani thats unwrapped or coated, if you still have your heat shields on, is your turbo ceramic coated (hotside), o2 housing, DP, proper cooling ect ect.

Also, you could have boost leaks? That would effect "spool time"

I can tell you w/ a small 16g, no boost leaks, everything ceramic coated + wrapped, no heat shields, only 1 fan.. at 18 psi I can "hear" it spool as soon as I give it gas. If floored its pretty much full boost when your foot hits the floor.

+1 for exhaust leaks and +1 for boost leaks. Double check that all is good in the world for your piping system and your exhaust path leading into the turbine housing.

Also, no one asked what intercooler your running/piping size. If you have full 3" I/C piping leading into some massive 24x12x4" thick intercooler than ya, that lil turbo will take along time to fill your pipe (if it takes longer to fill than it takes longer to drain) but that's all besides the point.

An ideal set up for you would be, custom J-pipe (makes the discharge face the opisite way not the factory side mount direction) that flows into short route 2.25" or 2.50" piping, a 10"x20"x2.50" front mount, again short route piping (goes over the top of tranny, not through the factory fender opening hole)

I hear ya there, I once had a real E3-16g turbo I got from SlowBoyRacing back in the day. With stock cams and turbo back exhaust I can recall good feelin boost at 3K. Ahhh, those were the days... Now days i rock huge cams and huge intake manni plenum with SUPER BIG Holset turbo. Talk about havin nothin down low... But that sudden burst of power at 5K is to die for tho !!!!

I agree with boostdtsi my mhi small 16g starts to spool around 2800 full boost at 3k . I agree with Wes_393 defiantly check for exhaust or boost leaks . I had the same issue afther a few hours of breaking my head trying to find a leak it ended up being a small exhaust leak and boost leak affecting my spool time .

On the current setup I'm spiking 30psi+ by 3300. You probably have a boost leak.

And I personally can hear it if I listen for it. But it's a fairly quiet spool. Don't expect it to be super loud.
