I read that the Sonatas that the G4CS is found in is a fairly common find but so far I have been striking out. I was just curious if those of you who have built one could give me some insight on how much trouble it was to locate? So far I am calling two hours away and still no luck. I have only been inquiring on the 89-92 Sonatas as I have read that the Gallant's are near impossible to find.

**Hopefully this is the right place to post this...I know it isn't a tech question but thought the people that may be able to help are in this section. If it is not please move to the appropriate are.

Thanks!

Wish I could help man, I live in a small town in WV and finding stuff around here is near impossible so I feel your pain.

I just googled online junk yards at a few came up that you can type in what you want to find and they send a request to a bunch of junkyards. I put in a 1991 sonata 2.4l. Within about an hour I had about 10 emails from junkyards saying they have one. Not many gave prices because they want you to call. But one of them said they have one that is running and comes with a 1 year warranty. I believe it was in Florida. That one said $700 shipped. I would suggest trying what I did and do a search.

Hmm...Ill have to give that a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Car-part.com

Just submitted a query to this site...guess we will see what I get back. I also have the option of purchasing one from a forum member in Columbus,OH...just hoping to find one a bit closer before I go that route. What have you guys paid for yours? Also, what are the best ways to check the integrity of a block before making the purchase (assuming it is stripped). I figured a straight edge along the bore of the cylinder would show any signs of wear on the walls....and of course a good inspection of the main...anything else to look for? This will be my first engine build ever...I am a diesel tech so I know the basics but I have never done engine building.

For what its worth, unless you are deadset on a g4cs, you can find 6 bolt 4g64s. They come in 91 and 92 Expo vans. They have to be fwd as the awds are wideblocks. Might be another option to throw at car-part.com if the search for a sonata doesn't come up with anything.

Out of curiousity...what are the differences between the 4G64 out of the 91-92 Expo FWD and the 4G64 out of 2G Spyders? I was avoiding the 4G64 due to the hassle of being a left mount transmission and the logistics of putting that in an AWD chassis. Is the Expo version a right side mount trans? If so then are there any down sides of going with the Expo 4G64 over the G4CS? I have done my best to research this topic so forgive me if this has been discussed before as I have not come across it.

Thanks!

How about a G4JS? They come in Kia Optimas up to 2006. It's a Sirius II motor.

From what I am seeing this is a left mount transmission. I am looking for a drop in option for a 2g AWD Eclipse...I would prefer to avoid having to fab the engine into the car. Let me know if I am wrong though...couldn't find anyone running the G4JS in a DSM via the search function.

Yeah that's right, the trans is on the drivers side. I didn't think about that part! I was just pretty happy when I rebuilt the head and was able to use 4G63 parts cause it's DOHC!

If you are talking about the 4g64 from the 2nd gens, the block(if memory serves correctly) is that is a 7 Bolt which have been known to crank walk. The g4cs is a 6-bolt. I don't tend to look at a lot of 2nd gen info, but I was under the impression the 4g64 had a passenger side transmission. It was the 420A that has a driver side transmission. The 4g64 also only came in the spyder gs.
The Expo has the transmission on the passenger side just like a 1g. I don't believe there are any downsides to going 4g64 over g4cs as they are both the same castings, merely made by Mitsu or Hyundai. It comes down to availability usually.
The later model 4g64, like from a 3rd gen Eclipse, are completely the wrong blocks are won't work. Not only are they facing the wrong direction(so a lot won't match up) but the block itself won't mate to the dsm transmission.
This makes me believe this g4js won't work either. But I've never heard of it or seen it in person.

^ Crankwalk with the 4g64 is very rare, especially since most have the split thrust bearing desing. But otherwise you are 100% correct. The 4g64 found in NA DSM's has a "left mount" transmission. The block literally drops right into a turbo/AWD DSM engine bay and bolts right up to a turbo transmission.

So if I understand correctly...the only difference between the two 4G64 engines listed above is that the one from the Expo is a 6 bolt? If so then I believe I will add the Expo to my search list, that should make it a bit easier to find one :thumb:

And to put it all in one spot, these are the 2.4 L blocks that are a direct bolt in option for a turbo 4G63 chassis, trany and head:

G4CS: Found in 89-91 Hyundai Sonata
G64B: Found in the 85 - 87 Mitsubishi Galant
4G64: Found in 91-92 Mitsubishi Expo FWD
4G64 (7 bolt): Found in 95-99 Mitsubish Eclipse Spyder

Please let me know if I missed any or if my stats are skewed as I would like this list to be complete before I start salvage yard shopping again. Thanks guys!
