This talk of intake mods got me thinking about my setup. I've got a nice 3" cold air pipe down to the stock SMIC location, but I've been using a POS knock-off brand mushroom style filter. I had wanted to make a velocity stack setup for the track awhile back but never got around to it.

Over the weekend, I pulled the filter to clean it and see what kind of space I've got, and when I went to run water through it, the thing filled up and barely any water came out the other side! Even after it was cleaned with dish detergent, it is very restrictive under the faucet. I can imagine it's pretty restrictive with air too. I've got a 3" velocity stack here, just need to trim it a bit and stick it on, I'll try to get some back to back logs with it. I'll definitely be using it next time I run!

I've seen many race cars using that material for filtration however that's a small filter overall. I was told get the biggest filter possible on there. I see you're gonna jump right to the stack though, so problem solved......as long as you guys don't catch any flying squirrels....

New rollers for the track!!! Thanks to the owner of a fellow 14b powered DSM!!!

Spent this weekend building my trailer. It's hard to explain everything that went into it but it was quite the project. I'll just say this didn't start out life as a car hauler so quite a bit of modification was needed. But, for less then $300 I have a functioning car trailer, w/ramps, tie-downs, and a toolbox mounted on the front! Not a bad investment. It's partly bittersweet as I did take pride in being able to say I drove my car to and from the track. But, I would really have hated to be in an accident with the way the car is gutted and without full coverage, it's uncomfortable to drive that far, I hate breaking at the track and trying to find a way home, and lastly now I can run full-out without fear of how to get home!

Today I plan on draining the older e-85 (e78 as tested) out of the tank and filling it with fresh e-85 (haven't tested yet but hoping it's true e85). I want to pull the injectors and check them for any "goo" as well. If they're dirty I'll soak them in straight gasoline for a while and then probably put a gallon or two of 93 octane in the car and go for a drive to wash it out.

Shane, what pre-pump filter are you running on your fuel pump? I ask because I always see people say stuff about the injector goo, though myself nor the guy who tuned my Evo ever had anything on our injectors. Mine was on E85 for about 8k miles and probably 10 months. His was on E85 for over a year and 20k miles and neither of us ever got the goo. What we did find out is that the fuel filter sent with the walbro pumps was not compatible with E85 due to what it was made of. The stock Evo filter was steel and wouldn't break down, therefore we never saw any of the goo issues. Just something to think about and look into. You can find those steel filters to swap out and see if it helps out if you aren't running one.

Back to the trailer, I would love to see some pics! I like my tow dolly, but I wouldn't mind having a flat bed trailer to put the car on. I can get a trailer frame from a dual axle camper/trailer for around $250. I would have to add lights with all wiring (HF FTW), a floor, and make ramps and tie downs. But I think I could do it all for under $600. A flat bed for $600 is dirt cheap on the left coast. Especially a dual axle! I might look into selling my tow dolly for some added profit and build a flat bed!!

I'll get some pics, she's kind of ugly right now. I plan on POR-15 fully coating her eventually but probably not before the shootout. What's funny is that is exactly what this trailer is! A dual axle old camper frame, flat bedded with boards!

Also in for pics of the homebrew trailer conversion!

Over the winter, I plan to POR-15 all the things!

Sweet man! Being able to take the 'how will I get home if I break something?' out of your mind should make for a more relaxed time at the track and help with concentration. At least for me it did...

Forgot to answer this part, just the stock walbro filter I believe. It's been a long time since I've had it apart. I find your results interesting, I was reading where a dsmer (who happened to be a chemist) did a lab test and was able to create the same goo by burning the e85 (the goo however ended up clear as there weren't the normal engine contaminants). Couldn't hurt to try a better pre-filter though!

I tested the new pump e85 I picked up at the pump and it was reading nearly e90! For reference the stuff in the car was reading just about e78. Can't hurt any performance I figure. I pulled the injectors and they were just starting to get the tiniest amount of build-up, figured it was worth cleaning them up. I also found that the #4 cylinder injector was the dirtiest and they got progressively cleaner up to #1 which didn't show any signs of goo.

That would be sick! Setting a goal of 11.25 at the shootout, with a belief that 11.15 is possible.

That's low 11s. The work you've put in is all positive changes. Things like the intake make the most difference. I know a ram air is worth a tenth or two and 2-3mph when dialed in.

Make us proud in Ohio this year. I can't go but I'll be watching for updates.

11.12 is my prediction with a 1.40 60'

Goal should be 11.005

That's the quickest Dave B. ever went in 4banger...haha

Dude, if we had the extra time, and I didn't need it to drive my car around Norwalk, I would loan you my SD setup to see what you could do with it.

Well things have escalated into panic mode. I did a boost leak test on the car yesterday, and decided to check for shaft play. This turbo is on it's way out, ticking time bomb. Some decent side to side play and worse some in and out as well. It could last the whole shootout, or it could last 1/16th of the track. Not worth the risk of it taking something else out with it. I'm searching Michigan and beyond for a good known 14b turbo, or a quick rebuild solution. :banghead:

I knew I should have gotten this thing rebuilt last winter, the side-to-side was getting a little worse then I like and I thought about it but funds were tight. Now I have a week and half to go and have to move fast.

Jeff and I rebuilt mine in his garage in less than 2 hours. That was our first try, referring to the computer a few times, and not having all of the needed tools. I am sure we will have a functioning turbo for you somehow.

I'm looking all around for you- trying to pull some strings. If my car wasnt my DD Id let you use it :).

I could give you my 14b but there's no way it'd ship there in time...

Tyler comes through! Helped me out with a quick rebuild and we should be good to go. Thanks again!

Thanks for everybody's help and concern. I was getting nervous quick. I should have it back together tonight and continue on the rest of the pre-shootout prep work.

Rock on! Been to long since I have seen it make a pass!
