when the trans (or what ever did) failed on the track. it was after i let off the throttle. the car had no forward of reverse and there was a clacking sound coming from the bell housing. i have NOT been nice to this transmission (lots of brake stalls and launch control). the video is what i suspect might be wrong. my torque converter - YouTube

It is only supposed to turn one way, that is correct. The stator is freewheeling, must have damaged the one way clutch. Did u notice it having extremely poor takeoff after the problem? Like it didn't want to move from a stop?

It didnt move. I did 3 passes. The end of the third pass when i was slowing i heard the noise. When i went to return to staging, as soon as i hit the throttle the engine just free reved. No motion in drive or reverse. Sound was coming from the bell housing. Thought i broke the flex plate. But it restarted fine so the flex plate was intact. I removed the trans and found nothing odd excpet the converter. Does anyone have a converter sitting around they can spin like ny video to verrifye this?

You don't take my word ? Haha. The point is the stator which that center piece is attached to is supposed to be locked to the input shaft which will increase vortex flow inside the converter, allowing torque multiplication and thus more power to get the vehicle moving. When cruising speed is reached vortex flow drops off as engine speed approaches the input shaft speed. And rotary flow takes over, that stator needs to freewheel to allow Rotary flow to occur.

The symptoms of a freewheeling stator is , extemely slow takeoff, slow transmission warmup, yet seamingly normal cruising performance.

should have been an easy diag.. usually no forward or reverse means pump or input... broken sprag would give you some gears that dont use sprag.. make sure you have the pilot in crank and how does the flexplate look
