Last weekend, I got a funny noise coming from my engine bay, So, I took off the valve cover. Come to find out, a rocker arm fell off. Meaning I have a bent valve. In addition, the cam journals, and cam caps were all chewed to hell. I bought a used head from a guy.

My full intention for this car is to build it as a drag racer. I have a truck, and a daily driver already. Also, it wont ever pass emissions here in Colorado anyways.

Now, instead of putting that head on, and driving it around leisurely, ive decided Im going to pull the motor, and rebuild the entire thing. Because Im tired of these one off things Im finding here and there.

Money isnt much of an issue, (within reason), I take home roughly 850 a week. And my rent is dirt cheap. I have full access to a 1 car garage, any hours of the day, or night I want.

Lets start talking the fun stuff for this build, Internals, Ill upgrade the 14b at a later date. But i'll do all of the supporting mods first.

I clearly want to build the head because I have it off. I ordered some L19 head studs right now, a little early, but extremepsi has them on sale for 40% off right now. With my old 04 gto i had, everything valvetrain wise, i bought from Texas-speed. Texas speed specializes in LS motors, and do not offer anything for DSMS.

What is a reputable company for Cams for these cars? I see at the top right now it says Brian Crower cams, are they any good? Springs, valves, everything, i would like to know what to shoot for.

And because Im taking the rest of the engine to the bench, What options should I look at for the bottom end? How do stroker kits for this do?

Esssentially, say you had 5k to spend to build the motor, labor free, what would you do? You all know more about these engines then I do. I will take any ideas into consideration. Looking for big power, and low numbers at the track.

Also, all of the supporting peices I would need, injectors, fuel rail/manifold upgrades, etc.

Thanks in advance! :thumb:

I am on the same boat as you as far as cams go. I know HKS and Kelford are well known and widely used on dsms.. But i also am wondering about BC cams because, honestly, they are cheaper.

Indeed, me too. I mean, kelfords are double the price to BC. Is the double the price worth it? Or is it just buying "name" brand.

I remember reading something about each brand being different in the performance aspect of each cam.
Im going to try and find the thread (i think it was a thread)..

Brian Crower cams are generally considered one of the least performing cams on the market. Compared to most other cams with the same advertised duration (272, 280, etc) they aren't a very aggressive profile. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but your generally getting less cam for the cash. A Kelford 272 will outperform a Crower 272 any day and that's the reason for the price gap. For everything else, I'd just advise you to dedicate a few hours to researching. Head upgrades can get a little complicated. Partly because you can overbuild the head. You want to use the appropriate parts depending on engine, turbo, etc.

An actual horsepower/ET goal would help. On here, big power could be anywhere from 500-900hp. But here's the basics on the different short block builds: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...stroker-destroker-long-rod-engine-basics.html

I'd just suggest staying away from stroker "kits". The crankshaft included is sub-standard to a stock crankshaft, and you can buy the other parts individually.

Also, all of the supporting peices I would need, injectors, fuel rail/manifold upgrades, etc.

Again, this depends on your actual # goals for the car.

Just found this
"Correct, a camshaft profile is basically a mathematical equation, therefore it can't be copyrighted. Sometimes a company can design and produce a cam profile for a certain engine that produced large gains in HP and torque, then find out it was copied and sent offshore. Because in the "lift" part of the equation you can have identical specs but somewhere past the decimal point it will vary .... which makes it a different profile."

That's referring to copy-cams, like the Delta DKS. It's nearly identical to the HKS 272, but those fractions of a MM are enough to keep them out of a lawsuit.

But when it comes to something like BC vs Kelford, there are actually full MM's and degrees of difference between them, not just decimal points.

Wes:

Im looking at building somewhere in the neighborhood of high 11s, to low 12s, at 6800 ft (the track here is in the mountains} by next years season. I intend on using a holset hx35, or 40, havent decided yet.

I will be doing all of the build myself, minus having the trans staged by jacks. Because Im 50 miles north of their shop.

Again, the funds arent much of an issue, i have another 9 months till next season starts.

If you are Into building a full drag car look into kelfords or gsc cams. They are top notch. You will be well into the single digits before you need to get some real custom stuff.

Springs depend on how high you wanna rev the engine. I guess it depends on whether you are going to stroke it out or keep it 2.0.

At the end of the day it all depends on your goals. Do you want something you can rev out, do you want a stroker motor, do you want a destroked motor (2.1), whatever? What are your goals? If money isn't an issue what is most important to you?

agreed, full drag car I would choose kelfords since they are more aggressive. I went with bc 272 on my rebuild mainly so I didn't have to fully upgrade the rest of the head. But I also daily drove mine

Store the running 6bolt numbers matching block in a very safe place. This is a dsm, a running engine is a big deal.

Find a spare, preferebly virgin, 6 bolt and have that rebuilt. I know stock pistons/rods can hold 500+ and one is even in the 9's. Forged is overkill iIf you arent making big power imo. Like others have said stroker cranks are often questionable. Stock cranks are forged and kick ass, find a nice one and have it polished, avoid cranks that are chewd up and need to be cut. For forged pistons and rods just do your research and find a good machine shop that knows DSMs.

Parts wise I have had good luck supertech valve springs and kelford cams. Kelfords are by far the best on the market butI alsp really like the delta dks 272 regrinds in my talon. They were cheap too.
I wouldn't look into oversized valves or porting for your goals. Once again a reputable machine shop can rebuild it for you. This should include hot tankin valve job, resurfacing, at a minimum.

These videos will help you a lot

Im putting together my shopping list on extreme psi right now. Got some kelford cams, and springs.

Question. Im looking at valves, and they show (STD) standard obviously, (+.5) and (+1.0)

What exactly is this saying?

I need some help real quick. Im about to take the head off right now. I went out and bought the allen socket that the book claims.

After looking, it seems like it has some L19 head studs in there. Which is cool, saves me 400 bucks... But, i cant seem to find what fits on there to take them back off??? Anyone have any ideas??

I figured it out, and got it out of there. Found out that it has some Weisco pistons in it, that look fairly new. So apparently somebody has been in the lower end of it before... That just saved me some money right there, maybe i just need to build the head and the turbo now.
