Facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends and family. Especially friends that are either too far to see all the time, or that you just don't see that often for other reasons. Also good to keep in touch with acquaintances like people you went to highschool or college with, if you can stand them.

My group of ski friends and I also use the groups section to plan where to meet up or to plan trips. It's a useful tool, IMO.

If you're using it to meet new people, yeah, it's lame.

I only use it to keep in contact with close friends and family that's living somewhere else. It's also good to hear from them and chat with them time to time. As for 'making new friends', its a horrible way to 'make friends' on FB. I noticed that mostly the teens make FB a mess with the stuff they do. haha.

I will admit that facebook is a great method of staying up to date ad in touch with family and friends, as well as tap into amusing meme feeds that can make you LOL for days. More importantly it helps you get to really know a person. You can see their history and what they think about specific topics if they've talked about it in the past.

I will also admit that it is sort of nice that I can be reminded of birthdays a day to a week in advance, i can also purchase tangible gifts for that person via facebook, and they have some decent prices. Example, a wind glass full of gummy bears (small gift for a girl you may barely know) at $3 shipped, you cant even beat that. You can even send wine or champagne.

Another thing that i will admit is, i don't like Mark Zuckerberg (but that is only because i am jealous), and i don't like them selling personal information to the government regardless of my privacy setting. Other than that, it can be very addictive, even if you don't think that it is, and I don't believe that anything will be competing with facebook for a very long time, if ever.

Oh yeah, I keep seeing ads for myspace, WTF?

Haha. This post is now coming up? Of course it is. I refuse to post my personal information about myself to the world. In case all of you social media users did not know, the CIA saves millions using facebook and related social media to build databases on civilians. It is an utter shame that they are working a domestic angle. Illegal?

You think the CIA doesn't already know the address to every living American within the United States?
They know where you live if:
- You have mail in your name going to your house
- You have mail going to your house with your parents name on it
- You own or rent a house
- You file income tax
- You have a bank account
- You have any kind of insurance
- You go to school registered from the address at which you live
- You have a cell phone
- You have a utility bill in your name

Dude, just sayin, they know where you live, even if you don't want them to, its pretty much inevitable unless you live in a hole in the middle of the woods somewhere. Unfortunately unless you are Amish, they know where you are.

Because of your facebook feed/interest/groups and your friends interests, they can use that information to predict where you like to go in your free time, what you like to eat, what influences you more, what kind of women you are attracted to, what you like to watch, what you like to listen to, and a million other things.

All assumptions. Now if (maybe they already do) google or apple ever gives the government information then that will mark a very dangerous time. Because for a majority of people, google/apple KNOWS where you are, what you are doing (based on where you are), what you look like, who you like to talk to, what you talk about when you use google messenger to communicate, and probably much much more.

There is a problem with the NSA doing what it is doing. But as you know with any new technology or discovery, there are benefits and risks. There are obvious benefits to social media, the down side is the risk of marketing corporations using this information to market to us, and if you happen to be a person of importance, then if you've ever used the internet to do anything AND I MEAN ANYTHING wrong, the person harvesting your information could use it to blackmail you into promoting their agenda.

I usually post pics of skiing, my dog, my vacations, my cars, or beers that I drink.

FB is only as good as the people on your friends list.

Couldn't have said it better.
And if you are so worried about your "secrets" getting out through FB, DON'T POST them there. It's that simple :)
Get really annoyed at people who put everything they do/know on there. Noone wants to see pictures of your drunk a$$ passed out on the couch. ROFL

I hate facebook and twitter and all those other social networking. When i had mine before i deleted it all i saw was a bunch of attention/compliment fishing people.

Its so annoying how everyone on those sites is trying way to had to be "cool", or get a compliment just to feel special. Especially women. All they do is take constant pictures and posting non stop just trying to wow who ever they can to feel special/pretty/admired.

What i even hate most is how they are online ALL DAY doing that shi t, and they say oh well i only have the account to keep in touch with my friends.

If thats true i dont see why they wouldnt have your phone number to keep in contact, Just an excuse to spend countless hours trying to flirt with the whole network. Thats all it basically is. People just wanting to hook up. Because im sure most of everyone has their family/friends number to keep in touch so this whole "its to keep in touch" thing is obviously just another excuse.

i only socialize with dsmtuners. No facebook, twitter, instagram for me.

I can agree with almost everything said, except the part about staying in contact via phone.

Here are my reasons.

- I don't want to be on the phone all day with my mother or sister, but I would like them to know what im up to, or see photos of my son without tying me up on the phone for 3 hours to talk about everything under the sun. The same goes for half of my other relatives or even female friends that i have.

- Just because I met someone I get along with doesn't mean I want to call them to talk about my opinions on the latest best practice of web development. But if he sees my fb post (with my opinions) on his feed, then he is able to respond with his opinions that i may find insightful on the matter.

I really think that some people just friends with terrible fb posting practices, and fill their feed up with garbage. It took me a while to filter all the crap out to only focus on things i most likely would care about.

"Keeping in touch" is not an excuse for me. I have zero people on my FB feed that fish for comments. If I did, they wouldn't be in my friends list for long. Nobody is trying to "hook up" or do any of that shit on my feed either. You must have had some interesting people in your friends list.

It's really no different for me than an automotive forum. You guys all post about what you've done to your cars in threads. FB for me is friends and family that post the stuff they're doing in life. And I like seeing that stuff.

I should probably mention that I'm 37 years old. So I don't have to deal with a bunch of highschool/teenager type drama on FB. Like I said, it's a great tool. But it's all about how you use it.

I have FB but don't care much. I only go on there once in a while if I have something worthy to post. Like today, I don't think anyone really gives a shit for me to post how I did nothing today but wait to go in to work on my day off. Piddled around, drank a beer in the morning, watched the power block, took a nap to work all night, grilled chipotle rubbed pork steaks, drank another beer, or anything else I did and didn't do today.

It is nice that you can check on people you haven't seen in forever or had moved away but yeah pretty lame. It's good for getting my GF asking questions like "seems most of the people you talk to or make posts on your stuff are women." or "why didn't you comment on my post?" .....Really?:|

I rarely go on my facebook, and that's only when I cant get a hold of some one or to check up on vendor's new products/sales. I to think facebook is dumb for the most part and agree with some of the stuff previously said. All theses social media and other sites are just de-socializing society dating sites are a big one.

I remember when facebook came out everyone in school was on the computers making an account........not many had computers at home so they could only facebook at school. Made no sense because everyone on facebook only used it at school and you seen them every day at school, such a fail.

Facebook, Linkedin, and even Twitter all have real-world applications beyond the juvenile reasons some of you are listing as "the only reasons".

Of course, with Linkedin, most people have professional jobs that don't involve the words "would you like fries with that", so a bunch of you are probably not familiar with it. ;) :troLOLoLOL:

Mark has it right. You can use a hammer as a doorstop, or use the goddamn thing as a hammer. It's up to you.
