Anytime I turn my steering wheel on my 97 eclipse, all the way to the left or right, I get this horrific squeal...was thinking cv joints or something...??? Happens even when car is parked and I am not pressing on brake...so def not the breaks.

I had this same issue with my 00 Eclipse (RIP)

I've already changed out my belts and tightened the tensioner a bit (have issues getting that to stay tight?)

Thoughts?

Power steering fluid is good. Which actually reminds me...Over the winter, my power steering kept going out on me through the winter...I got a new pump and pulley, but couldn't get time to change it out. But after the weather warmed up, it has been fine? What's up with that also?

Check your harmonic balancer, make sure its not trying to desperate. Only reason I mentioned the PS fluid is because you'd be surprised how many people will actually forget it LOL

I've already replaced the belt. I've tightened the tensioner...which fixed the squeal when the car is just running. But still there when turning wheel all the way.

Can you tell me where the harmonic balancer is? I'm still learning LOL

My power steering line o ring died and I had this same problem. Turn the wheel all the way. Then pour some fluid in there. Mine always looked full but I could add fluid without it ever spilling over.

harmonic balancer is your main drive pulley. The pulley bolted to the crank that runs everything.

It could be something as simple as your brake rotor dragging on the rotor guard shield. My talon does that when making a left turn. I pried on the rotor guard shield and it got much better, i need to pry on it some more though.

I've got to change my brakes and get the rotors turned here in the next week. So, we will see if that is the issue.

Is it squealing as you turn the wheel or while your steering wheel is still and your moving? Could be ball joints, that was my problem. Have a buddy help listen where the noise is coming from.

Its only doing it when I turn the wheel all the way to each side

What about a lower lateral control arm issue? Were they replaced whenever the recall was announced?

I'm telling ya, it the Power steering pump, leave it turned all the way and pour, itll have air bubbles and the fluid will go down even though it was already "full"

Yup I'm pretty positive its the power steering pump pulley is getting stuck...had my 3 yr old "drive" tonight for me while I looked...and sure enough, the belt literally stops moving then goes very slow...hope to fix this next week. Thank u so much to u all!!!

Just wanted to update that it was indeed the Power Steering Pump. Replaced and no more squeal
