Hello everyone so I recently rebuilt the top part of my 97 gst and rebuilt my t25 turbo installed it all back together with the help of a friend even double made sure the timing belt was correct. bought new spark plugs and wires, new fuel filter then fired the car up and it runs VERY rough at idle and while im driving and the car is at a higher rev say 3 or 4k it runs fine and sounds great while on the down shift but when i come to a stop to idle its back rough again also smoking the whole entire time. Here is a video of it at idle an im just at a lost because this is my first dsm need help please.

Check again and make sure your timing is not off a tooth. If its good, double check your wires and make sure they are going to the right cylinders. Is everything stock? Injectors, ecu?

Almost looks like your your burning up antifreeze. Has coolant level gone down? You could also do a compression check to see if something happened during the install of the head gasket.

I have done the smell test and i smell oil and I will check the timing again. I just think its weird that at idle it runs horrid and driving even wot its fine im gonna break everything down again tomorrow and check will update.

If its oil, that breaks it down to either a valve guide/seal, turbo, or its possible your head gasket didn't seal properly. Could also be piston rings, but I would start by taking your exhauust manifold off and see if the exhaust ports in your head are oily. If its not, your turbo would be the culprit.

You could be leaking oil in your turbo which will put just enough oil in your intake to give you that tough idle and when you raise the idle or drive down the road you are able to burn that oil off. Check your ic piping to see if you have excessive amounts of oil in there.

ok so i was able to get to my car today and my ic piping is good no oil in them turbo is good but when i looked at my exhaust ports on the head the number 4 cylinder is oily on the port side an the other 3 ports are dry.

You've narrowed it down to cyl 4 all there is to do now is figure out what is wrong with that cylinder. You could try a leak down test to figure out what is going on with that cylinder.

Hey guys,

So I had my friend come over who is an actual mechanic. We did a little looking around and he notice that my 4th cylinder port actually had coolant instead of oil. He pointed out that the spark plug would of fouled out if it was oil. He thinks its my head gasket or a crack in my head. So me and him will take it apart to see which one it is. If anyone else has any suggestions please post them! I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Team RODE-BERG woot!

Sounds like a head gasket or cracked head issue if you found coolant there

Could also by chance be the surface of the block or head around that area. If you take the head off you should be able to tell by the head gasket what area it's coming from.
