Hello gents. I've been toying around with DSM's for a little over a year now and started with the 1G awd platform. My question is, mostly 1G owners, have you run into issues finding parts and in your opinion is the 1G platform still worth modding? Is it officially getting too old to where i'm going to be just like guys trying to resurrect a muscle car from the 60's and end up fabricating parts that no longer exist soon? Every shell I find is so beat up and the problems seem to be endless. I don't mind working on my own car but would it be better to go 2G and save a lot of heart break or am I just experiencing a localized sample of beat up cars. Any info/opinion would be great. I'm at a point where i have a rebuilt 6bolt motor that runs well but have no real permanent stake in the 1G platform that would keep me there (ie suspension, paint, general good condition). So should i stick with it or move on to the 2G platform. As a side note, I love my 1G to death but since I'm not rich i have to consider which will take me further. Ideas?

Honestly, even with 2gs clean shells are hard to come by. I just finally got another talon (98 TSi AWD with 95,000km (58,000) miles. It took almost two years of searching to come across "the one" for me. I imagine it would take a while with a 1g. Although a laser popped up in my hometown about 6 months ago with 10,000 original km on it. (6000 miles)

1g or 2g clean examples are hard to find. Most 1gs being old/rotted and most 2gs riced out. Im bias roward 1gs but they both are great cars l imo. Just look for both and jump the best deal you find.

I really haven't ran into issues finding parts as of yet, my awd is in decent shape for a 90, I'm barely going to touch 110k miles on the body and it does have its issues here and there but most of the issues I got sorted out alredy. It might be old but it rides a hell of a lo better than my bros 3rd gen eclipse on bumps and what not and its "newer". I guess if you feel like your hitting a dead end then move on, but me, I'm gonna stick to the 1st gen I like em a lot better anyway.

find parts? the 6 bolt 4g63 is one of the most modded engines as far as four cylinders go ya alot of companies discontinued products but there is still everything u need out there i just found out a week ago i can get a set of ohlins for my 1g---starting fund

So all hope is not lost it seems. I'd love to stick with the 1g just because I like it better. A white AWD talon was the fastest car I've ever rode in and that was when I was 10 years old. I've been chasing the nostalgia ever since i could afford a project. I just dont want to get stifled when i'm 80% done building and realize i cant go any further due to some unforseen issues like the ones i mentioned earlier. For example, apparently a good shock for 1g awd is konis and they are discontinued last i heard.

Mitsu dealerships with their parts department can still get parts for your DSM - both 1G and 2G

If the parts people arent complete idiots and order the part number you give them. But thats a long shot LOL

So many other setups for 2013 they got the genesis 2.0t evo 8,9,X, gtr. Just dont dump to much into the dsm mod it right stock car with evo3 16g on e85 give you like 320whp. With just a few grand like exhaust fmic injectors. Anything more then this you might as well build a race car gutted and full everything. Otherwise your dumping alot money into old technology. Shop smart and do what you want. 2g are better looking. haters ganna hate.

1g's are still great and parts have not proven to be a problem yet. I thought my 2g GSX was the most comfortable DSM to drive but it lacked the thrill of the 1g. Must be the extra weight. The real problem with 2g's is that they rust out quicker, at least that is my experience. If you got to go 2g, you need to get one from the south.

I've been meaning to buy a brand new car for a few years now but my 1g's keep proving that there is no reason to replace them. And since you mentioned you are not rich, it can't get cheaper than to keep driving what you already have.

I appreciate all the opinions . I've been secretly toying with the idea of going EVO just because they are newer. I havent really run into any huge engineering type issues working on my 1G and feel that the engineers did a fine job with that platform which makes me lean towards mitsu in my experience. Maybe i will just take clipto's advice and have fun with my car but save my life's portion of car money for a newer platform.

I find that at meets the dsm is still a very respected platform. Everyone around here that i talk with is more excited by my dsm than my vette or the evo x mitsu screwed me on

The platform is slowly dying but the best part is people on here keeping it alive with innovative ideas and products. People with newer platforms have any kind of part they want, while we sometimes have to have them DIY style which makes it more interesting I think. Parts for our cars are real cheap, and they are relatively easy to work on. Newer cars are becoming very complicated and in a way are separating the driver from the car. With electric steering, drive by wire, and synthesized exhaust notes, having a good old fashioned mechanical connection makes driving much more fun. In your situation it may be best to get something newer if you don't have the money to keep the DSM running. They are old and will need work to keep them running good. The best thing to do is have a nice daily driver and save up for parts for the DSM. This way you can take your time when working on it.

When you think, the first DSM's rolled out of the Normal, ILL factory in Sept of 1988 as 1990 models. That makes this a 24 year old vehicle. It doesn't even come close to being collectable-only in a restore near mint condition, but not even close in value as does a 90 plus year old running vehicle.

Thus, it's a total risk owning 20 plus year old vehicles, putting tonnage of dough to either keep it running or all the mods done to it, knowing that returns will never happen, esp if the vehicle is destroyed in an accident or similar. Seen posts of owners having great pride in their project vehicles only losing them to 'the other driver'.

But, to the owner, it's still plain fun to do and be proud of the results done to the vehicle. I fall into this due to that I eventually want to restore my vehicle to a near new condition.

My '90 Laser rolled out in June of 1989 and my '91, 1.8 Eclipse DD rolled out in Nov of 1990. Have some old rides here ... but easy on insurances since I paid cheap cash for the Laser and the Eclipse was given to me on a motorcycle trade.

SOME parts for 1g's are not hard to come by, but these are mostly the wear/maintenance type parts...Try to find the lower window trim, or the knee bolster piece under the dash, or the little plastic clips on the center console. It is worth modding a 1g IF you can find a solid/clean shell to start with. AND you can get it at the right price. If the car needs a lot of the body and cosmetic type parts, good luck.
