Ok i had a over heating issue that turned out to be a blown head gasket. So i replaced it figured while i was at it i would replace my crank seal, front case gasket, install arp head studs (found out i already had them) and oil pan gasket. had alot of oil leaks... Got all that done and put it back together. Started the veh now i have this loud knocking noise coming from lower timing belt area. I have a aluminum harmonic balancer, so thats not the issue. Timing marks all line up. Veh runs fine except for the knocking noise. Does it all the time gets louder the higher the RPMs.

From the post i read sounds like a rod bearing but it wasnt making the noise before i replaced all the gaskets. Can a rod bearing go out at any time? Even if the veh isnt ran?

If it is the rod bearings, can you just pull the oil pan and replace them from there or would i have to pull the whole front case back apart?

Here is a vid of someone with knocking that sounds like mine but his is not consistant.

Sounds like rod knock, have you checked your oil for contamination of any type?

Its new oil havnt ran the veh more than 5 min.

You need to do a compression test. Sometimes if the HG leaks to another cyclinder it can knock.

I will do that this weekend. But no signs of head gasket not sealing like overheating or oil and water mixing everything was torqued down right.

Are you sure it's not just a loud lifter? I did my headgasket over winter where the car sat for a while and I had a similar knock but maybe not as loud as the video. Sit under the car while the car is running and listen by the oil pan.

Assuming you are still using the 7-bolt motor, another idea could be your crank trigger wheel hitting the crank position sensor. If the trigger wheel got bent in any way during the disassembly/reassembly, it could be hitting the sensor while spinning which in time will kill the sensor and the engine will quit running. However this is just a shot in the dark because if this was the case the sensor wouldn't typically wouldn't survive long before the trigger wheel destroyed it. I accidently had this happen with my Evo a while back.

Did you make sure to use the two shorter oil pan bolts on the timing belt side when reinstalling everything? Are there any marks on the timing belt?

An actual video of your car could be helpful.

Also, to answer your other question, you can just pull the oil pan and roll a new set of rod bearings into place if they're shot. However, if the knock is already "loud" due to the rod bearings, your crank is almost 100% toast and rolling bearings in will do you no good whatsoever. Then that would require a crank replacement, which you could do in the car but may as well pull the motor for as the transmission and front case could have to come off as well.

Ok, thanks everyone for your feedback. I pulled the lower timing cover back off and found that my crank trigger wheel is on backwards. Luckily all it did was score my crank sensor a little bit and slightly rubbed the timing belt. will be pulling the timing belt off again :banghead: and flipping it over.

One last update. So backplate was the problem. It wasnt backwards it had a bend in it where the pully puller bolt went all the way through and bent it. But either way its now fixed. Rubber mallet and some time to get it out runs great. Cant wait till i break everything in so i can play :D
