I bought a 97 Mitusbishi Eclipse Spyder GST back in December....Since then I have been working on the appearance of it. There are some modifications done to the car but im not sure exactly what? I want it to have a decent amount of horsepower but honestly I don't even know where to start. I'm really new to the whole DSM motors but I have done much research about various things. Where should I start and what should I do to make my horsepower go up? I notice that my car lags the "Get up and go" but I feel that it is fast once it picks up. My turbo is definitely lagging and I was told that the intake pipes could be to big. It would be very helpful if I could get some advice so I can start making this into the creation I have always dreamed of. I will attach some pictures.

Looks more like a 14b judging from the j pipe.. Just a guess tho.

Best and first mod to start with is ECMlink. Im currently saving for it :) I should of done that from the start.

Suck being broke. If i saved all the money i waste on beer, i would of had ecmlink a long ass time ago.

its super clean!

i would start with bolt on part such as

Cold air intake (if it already has one)
upgrade the intercooler
new exhaust/intake manifolds
upgrade the ignition coil pack/wires
and dont forget the exhaust system if it doesnt already have one

i am new to upgrading my dsm but i have had mine for about a year and a half now just installed a ignition killswitch today

First and foremost..start here..

DSM 4G63 Maintenance Guide - DSMtuners

Then esmlink etc......

Ok first of all hes not asking what to do before he mods his car.

Im sure everyone on here knows maintenance first before modding.

He asked what can he do for more hp, and there for ecmlink is the first upgrade he should take.

Learn to comprehend before you speak sir.

I'm implying he should do pmcs before modding..in OP no where does it state he did the recomended maintenance... which is believed by some a 'power' increase mod in itself..

Gd day sir

I think 16gs use a J-pipe also. The thing that catches me off guard is the stock piping going to the front mount.

Thank you all for helping me out...I'll look into these a little more into detail here soon...I'm a really busy person so when I get a little extra time I will make some comments on people's posts. Today I need to fix the bad connection with my subs today then off to work so not a whole lot of time to work with the car today :/ hopefully tomorrow....Keep leaving ideas though! Thanks guys!

I would do the all the maintenance first and look at doing all the free mods. Then I would get some gauges and emclink.

Ok so after reading all these posts I think I have a better understanding on what to do first. I will list some things that I have done to it so far...

-New Radiator, thermostat, radiator cap, and coolant reservoir
-New power steering pump and reservoir
-Custom interior paint
-Aftermarket Sunpro boost gauge, and air/ratio gauge
-Aftermarket Stereo with 1 10'' Pioneer sub (nothing great yet just a small toy for now)
-New belts
-New pads, rotors

Already had:
-Aftermarket 17'' Konig Rims
-Window Tint
-Lowered (not sure how much but its a lot)
-New Suspension
-Custom intake piping
-Taylor spark plug wires
-Aftermarket taillights

I think I am going to start next with just a nice performance tune up...I work at Advance Auto Parts and it says we have Premium performance spark plugs for my car(NGK Iridium IX, Autolight Xtreme Performance, Pulstar Pulse Plug, Champion Iridium). The only problem is that they are iridium. I have read many forums that say go with the NGK BPR6ES but they are just OE replacement and are nickel...I know that the iridiums last longer and are better so why are they not good to use with my car? Since I am starting with a tune up, what spark plugs should I use? Along with everything else? I want to go all out: Oil, Oil filer, air filter, pcv valve, spark plugs, plug wires...The whole works...I know right now I have a K&N air filter...here is the exact one.. RU-4740 - K&N Universal Air Filters, Universal Rubber Filter direct from K&N Is this filter any good? Should I go with the cone shaped one that lets air in from the top as well? I have no clue to be honest..Help is much needed and would be greatly appreciated...Thank you

Just go Ecmlink, wideband, boost gauge, then bolt ons.

iPyromaniacC42: your avatar makes me miss my first 420a ..

yea i have went thru hell with this car
sold it got it back then sold it and got it back

had to put about 1k worth of work myself to get it running but it works like a charm

just trying to upgrade this not to much tho bc i want to rebuild the engine and put a turbo on it eventually...................

-Aftermarket Sunpro boost gauge, and air/ratio gauge

Make sure you know the difference between a wideband and a narrowband AFR gauge. The latter is absolute crap and will do nothing useful for you.

Already had:
-Custom intake piping

Yeah, it's very obvious. Why didn't you just buy a cheap piping kit off eBay? eBay is not the answer for everything, but in this case it's an okay thing to buy on there.

True, iridium lasts longer. That's it. Don't be misled, spark plugs are not a performance item. NGK BPR6ES is all you want. Good heat range for your application.

Have you ever seen a person cover the turbo inlet with a fine mesh screen? They think they're hot shit, not running an air filter, claiming an air filter is more restrictive.

Further from the truth of course. Say one square inch of that mesh restricts airflow by a factor of 1, per 1 inch of media. Air filter 10. Air filter more restricting? Looking at the measured space yes. But the mesh only has say 4 inches of space. Versus the air filter being 20x more space. So the overall resistance to airflow is WAY lower with the air filter than the mesh.

Point is, bigger is better. But there comes a point where bigger is just overkill. Like for example big truck, little dick syndrome. In the case of typical DSM HP, not much thought needs to be put into this. Just get whatever fits in that space, in a cone style. Paper type filters filter better than K&N. Tradeoff is K&N flows more per inch. Therefore K&N can be even smaller than the stock air filter and flow the same.

I don't know how much of that you knew but there ya go, seemed you were curious.

And this really doesn't matter but wow. The wheel gap and bumper isn't doing much... Please please please don't be the guy who ends up on our official funny stuff on craigslist thread with crazy interior paint either.

LOL, damn sidemarkers always fall off ROFL
Nice ride though, get ready to become a master mechanic :thumb: All of people will agree that you ask questions and do the research before you do anything. Do it right the first time and not only will the car last but be fun to drive. Just... don't buy a boost controller and immediately turn the boost up.

hahaha.... big truck little dick syndrome. you made me laugh first thing in the morning

OP: I see no mention of a timing belt. Did you do that yet? I know its not as fun as 'cool' interior paint or speakers, but its a must unless you can prove without a shadow of a doubt its been done recently.

That said, get ecmlink as your first mod. Along with a decent boost controller(i see you have a gauge). Then you can turn it up a little. More boost=faster car.

Im surprised no one has mentioned the cosmetic issues..

Op, it may not be a bad idea to source another 2g later on for side skirts, rear bumber, tail lights, side markers, and maybe some new interior parts. It would really make the car look nice and probably keep you from getting pulled over more than you have to.

I'm not going crazy with the paint I just wanted a different color...I don't see anything wrong with that...I mean it is my car and all.....

Anyways....Why is my turbo lagging then? Is it because of that intake piping being too big?

And about the piping...I said that It already had it on when I bought it I didn't buy one at all...That's why I didn't buy a cheap one off ebay

Much help though...Comment back!

No body has mentioned so I'll mention it. Do a boost leak test. It's an old car, this will ensure your car runs efficiently. Turbo lag is normal, if you can't live with it sell your car and buy a Honda. Now if it's abnormal lag, like say it spools up at 5000 rpms, then yeah, there is a problem.

If you stomp the throttle at anything under 4k you will experience turbo lag... hell, I cruise on the freeway around 3k in 5th gear... if I floor it to pass I build 10psi within a second but it takes me till 4k or just a little after to build to 17psi that I run at.

Lag is normal, if you can't deal with it then downshift and run it to redline

cosmetic part dont make your car faster btw

All these posts an nobody asks the op for picture of the compressor wheel or serial numbers off the turbo:Hmm:

So op if you would please do that, we can get down to what other mods you have.Like ahard upper ic pipe, stock lower with 1g j pipe, 1g bov.Umm that was just a quick once over of your engine bay picture.

It appears that the rear bumper is just a lip kit? Hard to tell from the one photo of it. I don't think it looks bad because its actually finished the color of the car. The tail lights have got to go though. Or just night shade those ones, and pick up a set of stock tails for safety tests to swap out.

I will admit, the picture of the rear end threw me off for a moment... I was like, why is his back left tire so skinny??? Oh... face-palm...
