I am looking into buy my first DSM vehicle and I thought there was no better place to look for answers than here. The car I am looking at is on craigslist (always sketchy I know) But I was wondering if someone could give me input on the vehicle.
It is at the link
Modified 97 Eclipse *Driveable an Runs*

Any information that would pertain to this being a red flag would be wonderful. I do plan to swap the motor and am aware of "Crank walk". Other than that please feel free to throw in your input.

Thank you,

NoobDSM

PS. I am looking to purchase this vehicle next Friday and also was wondering if someone could maybe throw me what they believe that value is of the vehicle.

Save your money and be patient, don't rush or you'll regret you choice. As for which model to get I got my 1g after a long time of searching for a decent one, id search for a 1g bro, cheaper and if you find one in good condition, more room to spare DEPENDING what and how much needs to be fixed. Good luck

Yeah, I'll enjoy my GSXR 1100 this summer and in the winter when everyone wants to trade up for a new toy try and jump on a decent base car. Gives me something to spend my money on in the winter since the rocket will be down.

Or you can look for a Talon TSi or TSi AWD...

If you go with a Talon it will likely be cheaper to buy a nice AWD car. I see 2g AWD Talons on Cleveland Craigslist for 3k and up and they are in decent shape....Better shape than that busted up 420a

May have found one. 1990 Eagle Talon AWD TSi 5 speed. $3000. 4g63. "motor has about 1500 miles on it since rebuild, the balance shafts where eliminated, has wesco pistons and eagle rods, ARP hardware through the hole motor, 660cc injectors, AEM wideband, 3in exhaust all the way back, Battery relocated in back, boost gauge, 8000k HID headlights w/ballast, wallbro 255 fuel pump, brand new tires with 16 in rims, all new brakes and new wheel bearings up front, fuel pressure regulator, very fun and fast, pushing 20PSI with no problems". Transmission has been rebuilt with double syncros by Team Rip in Grand Rapids. Engine was cleaned up and honed and such at Great lakes cylinder and head. Found this on Craigslist but the kid is a member of this website. Sounds pretty good deal for $3,000?

It's running a 16 turbo not the 14b

Sounds a lot better than that last shit you posted haha.

But yeah that sounds better for sure! You'll be happier with that decision. I used to have a 99 GS 420a and it was cool back in 1998 when it was brand new but then when I realized how slow it was...I must have spent 30 grand trying to make it go faster. After all the work I did it was only a little faster than a stock GSX haha.

His pictures were not the greatest he's sending me a video walk around in the morning. Don't want to drive two hours to turn around. Interior is 8/10 in pics. Cosmetic is what id be left to do. Which is alright by me more to learn. I'll link a post when I get out.of work at 6am of his the not so good pics. We shall see.

1990 Eagle Talon TSI That should be a link to the original post. I have been texting the dude which is where the extra information comes in.

I'll be upfront. It's a '90, a 23+ year old chassis, I've had 2, I know. The 90's have their quirks and they have their merits. Ask any '91+ guy about tightening a oil filter... Right off there are couple things that give me a bad vibe.
Granted, I don't really like Craigslist, even tho it was where I bought my car from, he's had his issues and that's just that. I knew what I was getting into....
Also, maybe I'm a stickler for spelling, but wesco and wallbro? Google can correct better than that...
The other thing is, they didn't name one other brand name part. I'm not saying it's everything, but do a search for anything Ebay brand on this site, very hit or miss. Now, if you were to do something from a supporting vendor (e.g. JNZ, ETS, or Forced Performance, to name a few) you'd want to list it as such.
Long story short, it's a 23 year old platform that's probably been rode hard it's entire life. I'd even go so far as to say it takes a little dedication right now to get a DSM to a respectable status right now due to the abuse and neglect they have sustained over the years. That being said, if you're tolerant, willing to do religious maintenance and have a ton of fun with her, go for it!

Op, Since you're few hours drive from Cleveland. Already, have 3,500 cash on you.

I dont this all the time, I like to keep findngs to myself. No offense my brethrens :p
:D LOL ROFL

Pick your poison. NoobDSM Both are 420a's with same type of intake, 5 speed and also so Sexy clean. :sneaky: :thumb:

97 Eagle Talon(or trade!!)

Eagle Talon-eclipse 5spd manual

Each seller is asking 3,000 or best offer.

The 1g doesn't look bad. I would wonder why he's selling it only 1,500 miles into the rebuild. I also agree with Jim that I would ask about specific brands of parts used. It will give you an idea on the quality of the work that was done. If its all eBay parts then don't expect that he spent much at the machine shop either.

Honestly, in your price range, whether its a 1g or a 2g, chances are its been rode hard and needs some work. Just understand that. Just get a good platform and keep polishing it and making it better. You will learn a lot and have a solid, fun car in the process. Don't compromise for a 420a if you want a turbo car. Don't compromise for a FWD if you want an AWD. Be patient.

I happen to be a big fan of Craigslist and have purchased and sold most of my vehicles on there (bought my Avalanche, Jeep, Evo, Montero Sport and sold the Avalanche, Jeep, R6, and a Mirage). You will find some awesome cars and deals in the midst of all the crap. You just have to look, talk, and wait for the right one.

Who built the motor? Thing that worries me about built motors is a lot of people don't do it right and you have to end up rebuilding the entire thing. I've seen it happen a few times.. IF a shop did it, do some research on the shop.

Obviously test drive it but make sure that it's not smoking out the muffler when you rev it, make sure the oil looks good, etc.

This is why I came to this forum. The knowledge base it provides is endless. I do want an AWD Turbo for sure, but I appreciate you finding those 420a's. I will be looking for specifics on the engine later today and I'll research the shops(i found the 1500 sketchy too)

Couldn't give me a shop name, just that it was his girlfriends dads. -___- The search continues. Thus another too good to be true talon XD Ebay special internal parts.

Would a bone stock stealth rt TT be a good base? OMG I know this may not be exactly the site to be asking now but ran into a decent one that has zero extras. Has the VR4 twin turbo manual with AWD

If you are new to working on cars I would say no. Take a look at the engine in a VR4, its a lot harder to access thing, its going to cost more to mod / maintain.

If your in no huge rush to get into a car..ide say wait it out .both of my 1g tsi talons took me about 5 months to find..I looked for specifics and was very picky. And both bought from reputable shops for under 3500. If you buy off CL Always Always ask for reciepts for work done and vehicle history report. Even if it only tells you how many times its been registered..

If you have to get a car now..check classifieds on dsm forums..at least that way you have a chance of getting a car from someone that's familiar with these cars..

And then! When you find one..go here...
