I did some searching and saw my best option is a 2g rotors and calipers.. But most of the posts were 8+ years old. Are 2g brakes still the best option if I want to keep my stock 16" wheels?

Thanks!

*Edit* Going with the Outlander upgrade,

If you use 2G dual piston calipers you'll need special brake lines to make it work. Instead just get the dual pistons from 93 and 94 AWD models. Direct bolt on.

You don't need "special" brake lines just the ones from a 2G. They use a banjo fitting at the caliper instead of threading directly in.

The "best" upgrade would be something from an aftermarket company that includes lightweight 4 piston calipers and a two piece rotor.

If you mean the best for very cheap money then look into late 1G/2G/3000GTSL calipers and the Outlander brackets to fit the almost 12" Outlander rotors. They fit under 1GB Talon wheels I know for a fact and are a HUGE upgrade over the stock small front brakes and single pot calipers.

Another mod I have done a few times and prefer is the 3G/Evo master cylinder.

100% agreed

Agreed. The later year dual pistons are a great upgrade.Outlander bracket are also a great option.

Since the thread says "best" I would say go with the TCE 12.2" set up for the DSM platform. Calipers are super light weight and rotors can come in two pieces. In addition they fit in 16" wheels. Did I mention they weight less, thats unsprung weight:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Thanks for the responses, they've helped a ton! The outlander swap looks very appealing to my budget, I think I'm going to go with that. Can that be done on front and rear? Or is it just front?

So for my 1990 gsx I'll need:
05/06 Outlander rotors
93/94 GVR4 Calipers (Galant? 3000GT? I'm a little confused as what I need here)
05/06 Outlander caliper brackets

Is that it? I can bolt them up to my 1990 GSX without any spacers or adapters or anything? Can anyone link me to the right calipers I need?

Bump! I need some help on Caliper selection. Also, the outlander mod can only be done on the front brakes, right?

Make your life easy and purchase 05/06 calipers with brackets form rock auto, they are the same price if you just got the brackets. Hell, their 5% off coupon probably still applies.

And you will use 05/06 outlander rotors.

The link left for you about the outlander brakes has all the info you need. There is no mention of spacers or adapters needed. Shaving of the caliper depending on what 16inch wheel you are using.

I read everything in this thread and I'm still not sure if this is front brakes only. I assume it is, but I don't know jack about brakes. I just need to make sure I have all the parts right so the brake shop doing the labor has everything they need.

OK, so I'm going with these front rotors:
Mits Outlander 05 06 Drill Slot Brake Rotors Front | eBay - $140 shipped

These calipers and brackets from http://www.rockauto.com/ :

$99.79
A-1 CARDONE Part # 18B4670B Reman. A-1 CARDONE Friction Choice Caliper w/Bracket
Front Left; with Metal Piston; Supplied with Mounting Bracket; Installation Hardware Included

$93.79
A-1 CARDONE Part # 18B4671B Reman. A-1 CARDONE Friction Choice Caliper w/Bracket Front Right; with Metal Piston; Supplied with Mounting Bracket; Installation Hardware Included

I understand I will need to shave down the calipers to make them fit my 16" Rims.

Will upgrading to stainless steel brake lines make this install any easier? The thread says:

Outlander calipers use 2G style of brake lines, so 1G guys will have to do some creative plumbing to adapt the lines

What's all involved with "creative plumbing?" Can I just buy 2g stainless steel brake lines?

Thanks again!

It is only the front, if it was also the rear, I am sure someone would have mentioned this by now. In all honesty, unless you dont have the tools or time, or a friend to help with bleeding, its really a job you can do on a Saturday afternoon.

Those calipers and rotors will fit, although I would not buy rotors without some kind of warranty, I usually get my stuff from brakeperformance.com

2g style of caliper uses a banjo bolt, and the matting brake line uses a banjo fitting. 1g uses a inverted flare m10 x1.0 fitting.

Oh cool, thanks, that link led me here:
RRE's Eclipse Brake Upgrades

Apparently I can order 1g stainless steel lines with 2g connectors. Perfect! E-mailing them now. I think I'll order the rotors from breakperformance as well.

Yea no problem buddy.

One thing I was thinking about is, do the calipers or the brakeline kit come with banjo bolts.

I got my new SS brake lines w/ 2g connectors and the outlander rotors in the mail yesterday (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclbrakes.htm). Hooray! I can pick up the Outlander Calipers and brackets locally, but before I do, will 2G Calipers be smaller? I know the Outlander calipers will BARELY fit with my oem wheels, and that they will have to be shaved down for proper clearance. Will I be better off with 2G calipers instead? Or should I just shave the Outlander calipers?

The calipers are the same, its just the outlander brackets that move them out further.

Oh, so I might as well stick with the outlander calipers, because I have to use the Outlander brackets, is that right?

Thanks!

People that have a 2g awd already usually just get the outlander brackets and reuse there calipers , if you don't have either you could buy the outlander calipers that include brackets that someone posted above, it would cost less that way. It really doesn't mater though the calipers are the same, they use the same brake pads, I would just get whichever one is available for the best price.

Perfect thanks! Now I just need to test fit them and try to figure out where I need to grind down. :D

^ They are the single piston calipers. I hope those arent the ones you ordered.

This. If your calipers look like that, they're not the right ones.

I couldn't find the calipers and brackets locally, but I did find them here:
Centric 141.46092 Semi-loaded Brake Caliper | Auto Parts Warehouse
and the same part number on ebay for $20 less.

Here's a picture, are the areas outlined in pink where I'll need to shave down for proper clearance? I assume so, since I'm pretty sure that's the side that faces out/toward the wheel.
