I am trying to learn all i can about my GSX 97.
it was owned by a 69 year old man, it has only 48k org miles.
-just purchased it, wanted to know what kind of aftermarket turbo is in it, or any info from looking at it.

-he said it could go up to over 20psi, it's set at 9.
-also why is there an extra intake on the bottom of the car?
and all you guys can tell me about it based off of the pics, also what the that device in glove box? guy didn't know, prev owner before him did everything professionally. Also is it the best thing to do when the turbo kicks in at 5k rpm. This is my first turbo car.
-he also uses 10w-40 oil, should i stay with that?

Pics are post on profile

-also let me know if you need extra pics.

Please Help

That thing in your glove box is some kind of shift light adjuster. Do you have two round light looking things that light up when its time to shift? And the extra intake? Only thing I can think of is the intercooler used to cool intake charge. You have a sweet car nice find

Thanks bro, i was actually thinking of the same thing, about the shift light, i just don't know why it would be in the glove box.
-i am also wondering how big that turbo is, my friend said it was a huge one.
-i'm just not that educated on them, besides the basics.

"extra intake"?

If you are talking about the thing that looks like an exhaust pipe then it is the atmosphere release for the external wastegate you have.

I will assume from your first post that you are wanting to be educated about what people have already done to your car so here goes.

I will try to break down the turbo system so as to understand how and why it works. I am fairly new to all of this also but this is how I understand it. If you already know how the major components of a turbo work then skip the whole next paragraph.

Intake air gets pulled through your car just like a normal car would. Your car is basically the same as a N/A car until the turbo spools up and starts to create more pressure in the intake piping than the engine can create on its own. In order to do this the turbo uses exhaust pressure. You have two wheels in your turbo that act like fans. The exhaust side starts turning when the gasses and airflow pass by it. Kind of like blowing on a pinwheel. Since the exhaust wheel is connected to the compressor (intake) wheel, it starts to turn also. The intake wheel pushes air though the intercooler (where the air gets cooled like a radiator cools fluid) and starts to build the pressure in the piping. Once you have achieved boost instead of a vacuum is where you start to feel the horsepower kick in. The two other components of a turbo system are basically to make sure that you dont cause problems because of the turbo. The blow off valve allows air to escape from the intake piping when it receives a vacuum pressure (i.e. you take your foot off the gas). If it didn't have this you would build too much pressure because the turbo is still pushing air through the piping and the throttle plate is closed not allowing the air into the combustion chamber. The wastegate opens (under a certain boost pressure) to allow exhaust to bypass the exhaust wheel so that the turbo doesn't continue to speed up and create more pressure.

Normally the wastegate gets routed back into the exhaust piping from the factory. On your car however they made it so that it doesn't get routed back into the exhaust and actually gets released right after the O2 housing. You probably notice that once your turbo hits max boost it seems very loud.

Ahh good info.

-I was talking about though more along the lines of, the size of the turbo itself.
i asked my friend for example if it was like a stage 3 turbo, and he said it was bigger then that.
-just checking if anyone would know the kind of specs on it from the pics.

-thanks for the info on the extra looking exhaust, that was bad wording on my part.

Also when does you guys turbos kick in?
the prev owner had it set at 5k rpm.
-i don't think it's bad, but what is the best to stay around?

Very hard to tell from those pics. Does the turbo say anything on it like TD05H or TD06H or Turbocharcher or MHI?

Thanks, but it takes pictures better than it looks in person LOL

Come on man, I know you're new to all of this but we arent here to spoon feed you. There is TONS of information on this site, you just have to look for it. Google is also your friend.

As for your MAF question. MAF = Mass Air Flow. There should a black "box" thats connected between your air filter and the turbo, should look like this http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/me0wnUcCFJSNW7qJaas0ayA.jpg

For your turbo identification. Unless we get some part numbers or compressor wheel specs all were doing is guessing. And from your terrible angled pictures they're going to be pretty shitty guesses. Take a look in here, see if anyone has one that looks similar. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/57878-what-turbo-merged-turbo-id-identification.html

Stock the 2G's spool up pretty quick. I rode in a stock GST with the T-25, and spooled at 2800rpm, and max boost at 3000.
My 14B spools at 3000, and hits max at about 3200.

I dont see that turbo being bigger than a 16g.

The car has 49,000 miles. Its 14 years old. Hows that timing belt look?

Thanks. Its almost ready again.

Definitely post the pics of the turbo on this thread. vv Im not too good at turbo ID.

Also, timing belts are neglected in these cars. Its very important that you check the condition of the belt. If it goes, youre gonna be out alot of money, and a car for a while. I attached a pic of the timing belt. Theres a cover you gotta remove(if its not already removed) I think 3 screws. 2 on the valve cover, and one on the side of the cover. Pop the top part off, and check it.

Looks like you have a garrett turbo, but I couldn't get a good look at the box near the intake (could have something to do with fuses since its near the fuse box). The "2nd intake" is just an open dump for the wastegate instead of recirculating it into the exhaust

Not sure on turbo size but that ''intake" is a external dump tube for the wastegate. Looks like its got the stock Down Pipe. Aftermarket exhaust manifold and intake pipe. The little blue thing with the twist knob is your manual boost controller for turning up Boost or PSI that the turbo will make. Id look for some ID numbers on the turbo and check them out.

Do some research man its the only way to really learn about these cars.
