ECMTuning a good tool for a 1gen to have a tuner dial everything in? Or are there better options?

Car currently has a small 16g MHI turbo.
Internal Wastetgate
Generic Manual Boost control
255 lph fuel pump
650cc injectors
fresh rebuild on head
Side mount I/C with HKS Hard Pipes
1gen BOV or Forge BOV
1gen MAF
I can't make the exhaust out, looks to be 2.5" (intentions to replace with a full 3" set up)

My plans are to convert to FMIC & 18g turbo. Was looking at the FP TD05H 18g but have more research to do. I'm basing my direction off a 2gen GSX I owned years ago with the Greddy 18g set up. Have missed this car since selling it 12+ years ago.

Whats an estimate of safe boost off the given info?

Hello all, I have a 97 spyder gst. The mods include - evo 16g turbo, 255 walboro fuel pump, front mount intercooler, turbo back magnaflow exhaust and HKS bov (recirced ofcourse!) and that is all the mods I can think of right now. What is the safe amount of boost I can do with a boost controller and aftermarket boost gauge?

P.S I did search but found no threads with my mods or similar, thanks for the help! :hellyeah:

Any injectors? If not I'm sure most will tell you stock boost levels.

Wastegate pressure... so 10-12 psi... since its a 16g it should be 10 psi.

You dont want to start upping the boost without at least a wideband, most come as a package to connect to a laptop for between $160-$200. That way you also have a way to log what you are doing.

But to safely up the boost, get in this order, wideband, way to tune and log, injectors... thats about it and this has been covered 6, 567, 876, 678, 743 times... so im sure you didnt search very hard.

You can also get the wideband and device/software to tune and play around with the stock injectors A LITTLE BIT, because they run rich from the factory. Then you can get the hang of tuning. Dont go buck wild and think they can handle a bunch of extra boost, just play around and get used to tuning hefore you drop the $$$ on injectors.

A million.

There's a TON of variables here, each suits different cars differently. For instance, if your intake temperatures are sky high, that would put you at less maximum PSI overall then if your intake temps were in the 20-25C range.
Get a tuning solution or, failing that, atleast something to log with so that you can see how the engine is responding and how the ECU is correcting. Then up it (staying within efficiency) until it's no longer safe.

Just saying "FMIC" doesn't mean much as each has their different properties.
As asked, injectors?

Your mods are actually fairly common and almost defacto for a low-mild modded DSM, sans the brand name exhaust and bypass valve.

Are you using anything to tune with (Dsmlink, Safc, etc)?

If not, you may want to look into an engine management system before you start cranking the boost up. A good wide band is a good step also.

I had a similar setup on my spyder at first, It's not good to do so but u could get away with about 14 psi before any worries... I wouldn't risk more than that. It's not proper to raise up the boost without at least a wideband, like the other guys have stated.

Hey Guys! Quick question, well making a long story short,. I just Bought myself a Greddy boost controller and turbo timer. I took the head of a six bolt to the machine shop and built the head of the motor. The boost without the boost controller is at 16psi for some reason, most likely something to do with the wastegate actuator. But my motor takes it like a beast. But anyway i have a walpro 255 fuel pump and i did increase the fuel injector size to 750cc's. The question is can i turn up the boost to like 18 to 20 psi safely and have it still be a daily driven with no need to worry? Thanks for the replies in advance guys.

Please fill out your vehicle profile.

From what I can tell, your car is stock - save for a boost controller, a 6 bolt swap, fuel pump and 750cc injectors. Based on that I'd say you need to start worrying about tuning before upping the boost on what must still be the stock T-25, right?
You see where I'm going. :)

Fill out the profile and then you can get some real answers. Though, I'm betting, the most popular response will be something along the lines of "You tell us". You see, we can't really give out that kind of information so readily. Every car is different, so what might work for one car may not work for another. Your best bet is to take some logs and comb through them to decide if your running safely and can safely increase the boost.

What are you tuning with?

head of the motor is built, better cams, s2 cams. the head is bolted down by ARP head studs, and was built at the machine shop. not to long ago. i have MSD Multi spark ignition system as well. the boost is creeping to 16 psi i dont know why its not vacuum leaks did a test a week ago and there is none. i just ordered a AEM wideband coming in the mail. i just got the boost gauge controller and timer earlier then the wideband. so i'm just asking if its a certain good psi to run by till i get the wideband and tune the car.

im also running wastegate pressure

Hey guys, I'm just finishing up my 6 bolt swap. Doing a boost leak test, which brings to me to a very important question. What am I going to be running for boost. (So i can test that psi)

Heres what I got

Mods
-PTE/Delphi 780cc Injectors
-AFPR (not sure what brand, but red anodized unit)
-Walbro 255 fuel pump
-stainless steel line to stock fuel rail
-stock return

-DSMLink v2

-stock engine

-ETS Mitsubishi Eclipse 2G 7" Street Intercooler w/ ETS piping and all
-Magnaflow catback (not sure of diameter, will check)
-Ebay Test pipe

-ACT Streetlite flywheel
-ACT 2600 Pressure Plate
-ACT Street Disc Clutch

-GReddy Profec B-spec II Boost controller
-GReddy Profec B-spec II Turbo Timer
-GReddy Type-S BOV

-Innovate MTX-L Wideband
-Autometer boost, narrowband gauge.

i believe thats it. thanks for the help!

Running 93 + Toluene with Water/Meth injection allowed me to spike boost to the mid 20s and taper to the high teens on my 14B last time it was on the car. This was aided by a massive 30/12/3 intercooler, and high oil pressure (fed from OFH, no balance shafts) with quality synthetic oil (Rotella 5w40)

Car was a blast.

Sorry if this is a repeated question or something but I haven't found an answer yet. I'm getting a big 16g on my 99 gsx. Everything on the car is stock. Stock injectors, intercooler, ecu...all stock. Anyways, I'd be running the 16g at stock boost as well but from what I've heard, even at stock boost it will create more power. Is this going to damage my engine? I feel like it won't really but I'm not sure. Also it will bolt right up to the stock manifold correct?

Yes its a stock turbo, you may need a some new lines though, grab a wideband and possibly a way to tune the car in the near future if you plan on upping the boost, keep it low for now. A 16g is a great turbo depending on what you have now on the 2g.

You can install it without any problems. However, i would keep the boost at wastegate pressure, until you can get a tune.
