So yesterday I was on my way to work, and was pulling onto the highway and got to 3rd gear and just barely hit boost to get to highway speed, and the entire care jerks and starts shuddering, zero acceleration, car is shuddering and shaking, couple backfire pops from the exhaust too. When I got to work, I parked the car but left it running, popped the hood and heard knocking, pulled the spark plug closest to the timing cover ( I believe thats number 4?) and the kknocking stopped. Im fairly certain I threw a rod, just want some to confirm so i can start this tear down

Here the link to the video-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwHm5ZrI5aQ&feature=youtu.be

side note, at around 30 secs into the video it sounds like the bov is stuck open...? Any ideas on that?

Definitely sounds like a spun rod bearing, sorry to say :(

What are you going to do now?

Start tearring her apart unfortunately :( i have another awd tsi i was using as parts so im thinking i can frankenstein the 2 motors together

Have you pulled the valve cover? Ive had a stuck lifter in a car (not eclipse) sound exactly like that, and it ran like crap as well.

Not negating whats been previously said about a bearing, its just something to look into before you tear into it completely. It sounds like its an "upper" end knock than a lower end to me... but of course its over video and not in person

The sound is similar to either an issue with a single lifter or the beginning of rod knock, though rod knock is usually lower frequency sound (if we can trust the camera's audio recording capabilities).

However, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how the events that transpired contributed to rod knock.

I wonder if the valve keepers let go or otherwise caused a valve to hit the piston. An open intake valve at the wrong time would affect performance, and the process in which it's buggered also can contribute to the sound you're hearing now.

Can you hear the sound even louder from the oil pan area, using a real or screwdriver stethoscope?

So I was messing with it today and the noise does seem to be coming from the head behind cylinder 1..? and when I pull cylnder 1 the knock goes away. Wondering if this could mean bad injector or something like that?

I would pull the valve cover off and just look and see if everything looks uniform.
I can't tell you what to look for exactly cause any number of things can go wrong
A rocker bearing could go bad, a lifter could have just froze.
If everything looks good I would see if you can spin the motor by hand and watch to see if something don't operate as it should

Oh and check that plug and wire on cylnder 1 the long tube part of the wire could have an issue

Usually if you remove combustion and the noise goes away then you have spun the bearing on that cylinder. The lack of combustion isn't forcing the rod down so therefore it dosent collide with the crank and give you the knock sound. Sorry if that makes little to no sense( long day)

What he said, if it were a lifter or something head related youd still hear it every time the cam lobe came around. Stop running it and drop the pan. Maybe its soon enough that nothing is marred up and you can just replace the bearing?

Yea best way to find out is to pull the oil pan. Check for metal shavings and feel the rods and the crank for any play. Take the rod bolts off and check how it is. You'll see if anything is wrong.
