surfside, Texas
I'm new to the Houston area. I'm originally from Florida. I'm here in Texas in Surfside right on the beach. I sold my house and put all my DSM's worth holding onto in storage units. Mainly moved here to take some of the burden off my sister after my step-father had a stroke and both him and my mother would need assistance financially and physically. So sense I'm gonna be here I might as well build another DSM to keep me busy. I found a 1999 gst (white) with 111k (manual). The kid (owner) had no idea what he had. He said over the phone that it used to be a non-turbo and now it's a turbo. His ad showed pictures of the engine bay and it showed a 4g63 with a 1g intake manifold. So it had at least a 1g head on it. But I was praying that it had a 6 bolt in it. Anyway here's the kicker, the kid was asking for $1000, and said that the engine runs but something is wrong with it. He said that it blew up or something. So I drove to Austin with a vehicle carrier. (3 hour drive) Took the same road that the cast from Dazed and Confused were on at the end of the movie when they were driving to Houston to get aerosmith tickets. (top priority of the summer). Anyway I got there and checked out the eclipse and decoded the VIN, it was a 99 gst alright. The engine looked like crap but for $1000 it was still a steal. I loaded it up and brought it to my new surfboard factory in Surfside, Tx. After a day of inspecting it, I decided to gut the entire engine bay and rebuild the block and put new parts on the entire car. It turned out to be a 6 bolt!!! YEA!!! It's currently a great street car, and it's running/boosting great. The only thing that's not new is the alternator and it's going bad. Not suprised that the only thing that I haven't replaced is going bad. Wondering how the Houston DSM scene is? Sorry for rambling, thanks redbull

Don't need to, don't have any issues, yet. An HKS VPC would be nice.

yeah I got lucky with the color. I'll checkout the houston forums, thanks.

Just drove it around and after giving it a 2nd & 3rd gear pull the battery and brake light came on. Time for a new alternator. Car runs & idles perfect for about a mile just before the engine warms up.

the kid described being in a parking lot and out of know where a big noise followed by smoke pouring out the engine. He gave me a new 2g water pump and said that he was having over heating issues. So when I bought it and took it apart I noticed a bunch of silicone in and around the thermostat housing. The guy put a 2g thermostat in a 1g housing. It's bigger thus not sealing. I figured the smoke was actually steam from the thermostat when the silicone seal broke. So nothing was wrong with the engine. The previous owner went off the VIN to get the parts for the 2g and didn't know that he had a 6 bolt out of a 90 gsx. I decoded the vin# on the block. So sense I saw this typical dsm owner with 0% knowledge of the 4g63 engine, it was an easy decision to gut it and rebuild with new and aftermaket parts. I put it together using my 20 years of dsm engine building and tuning experience. Lucky for me and unlucky for the $70k shelby cobra replica 2 houses down.

New 160amp alternator is installed. Engine is complete. This thing is ready for the street. Runs perfect! for now

yeah this 99 gst won the lottery having me pick her up. It was very beat up with jimmy rigged parts everywhere, and was put together by a two year old.

I love that movie! I really like the part were hooterson is taking to the guy in the white firebird and that guy says " I saw this in the back of a comicbook man!, 2.99 , right next to the sea monkeys." Classic line. Anyhow also sorry to hear about your family issue's, Hope they get better. Keep up the good work on the
2g.

Thanks, things are going well, his heath has improved sense me being here. My step father is a huge car/racing fanatic and has had nobody to talk to about nascar, F1, or anything car related until I moved here.

"Hey billy, you got your wood screws on? Because I'm about to blow your doors completely off!"
that's my favorite line
