Took my eclipse to the shop to have them throw a timing belt on since its to cold for me to be outside doing it (Iowa winters are killer). They ran a diagnostic test and their computers came back that they couldnt read any codes. Since my car sounds like a lawnmower when it runs and has no power above 35mph they decided to dig a little bit and they said my spark is pretty far off and their tests arent coming back right. They came up with that my ECU is shot. How this would happen, i am unsure as the car was driving fine until the alternator went out. I had a different shop change the alternator just to find out that the fuseable link under the hood blew out as well. After the shop gave me back my car with a bad fuseable link it sounded like a lawnmower and had no power from then on. I changed the link, battery light went away so I dont know if the link blowing could of sparked off into the ECU but does this diagnosis sound right? I would think with the way the car sounded and the lack of power above 35-40 it would of been the timing.

if it sounds horrible and you have no power, you may have a massive exhaust leak. N/A engines need exhaust back pressure and if your exhaust is broke there may be no back pressure thus no power.

good luck with your shady mechanics not being able to do a proper diagnosis.

420a ecu are sensative I went through two ecu just I little spice on a melted wirebin my tps due to the harness touching the egr pipe that goes to the intKe manifold fried the ecu twice third time good shop saw what caused it before they slapped the third one in. If fusable link popped wont be surprised the ecu shorted but when my ecu went my car never even turned over not even a click. Quick way I found my ecu went was when I put the key on the on position no ecu light showed like it normally does on this mode

Before dishing out ~$500 for a new ECU, I'd suggest checking your Camshaft Position Sensor and Crankshaft Position Sensor. I learned this the hard way on my 420a Avenger. I had a similar issue with spark and it randomly stalled out a lot and I thought it was the ECU as well.

I got a used ecu at my local junkyard for 85 bucks. Ill tell them to check both sensors as well in hopes its an easy fix.
