So I finally got all my supporting mods for my new turbo setup and so I am in the market for a new turbo. I'm looking for something for street use/weekend track use. I've been looking at the evo 3 big 16g , FP 68hta, and FP red. I would like to pick up a used turbo because they are a lot cheaper. I recently ran into an ad for a big 16g and im pretty sure the serial number checks out to be a big 16g. I just wanted know which turbo would be the best for me and how to check the authenticity of a 16g. I know to check for shaft play and chipped wheels but I'm not sure what else to check for since i haven't bought a turbo before and this turbo has 5k on a rebuild. What do you guys think ?

Big 16G, 15* clip on the turbine for some reason....a Big 16G comes nowhere near maxing out an unclipped TD05H turbine. Something seems fishy about the inner diameter of the inlet....the "step" is missing, unless it's just the angle of the photo. If the step is indeed missing and I had to guess I'd say this is either an 18G or 20G compressor behind a Big 16G cover which would explain the reason the turbine is clipped. Better photos or possibly compressor wheel specs could prove this assumption to be true or false. ;)

By the way- a used turbo is a used turbo...doesn't matter whether it has 50, 5,000, or 500,000 miles on it. If it's been on a car and had oil run through it, it's used. I find it hilarious that every used turbo ad out there says the turbo has "less than 5K on it"...a statement that means dick when it comes to judging bearing wear. I've had customers blow fresh rebuilds in 20 miles from oil contamination; I've had customers send me 14B's with over 200K on them to be "freshened up" when in reality they're in perfect usable condition. Any used turbo is a roll of the dice.

I agree with JusMX141. You get what you pay for. I went the same route you are thinking. I bought a small 16g used minimal shaft play, only lasted a couple months before I had issues. From there it was just a money pit, trying to resolve the issues I was having. In the long run I could have had bought a fresh new one for what I had spent trying to fix the problems. I suggest save your money, do your research, and by a turbo thats is going to satisfy your goal. I myself am on FP68HTA and is very streetable. I would suggest that one.

Yeah I see where you are coming from. Did you buy your FP new? How much boost/power are you pushing on it?
