I just bought an HY35 turbo for my 1991 talon. Its set up to fit on my turbonetics t3 manifold with an external wastegate. Anyway, The turbo does have some shaft play, up and down, no in and out. Just wondering where you guys would recommend buying a rebuild kit from, and what i should all replace on it. Thanks
Jordan

How about just the rebuild kit itself so i could rebuild it myself? Any recommendations?

The HY35 won't work with a turbonetics manifold. The turbine housing will contact the block. If you're checking shaft play without oil in it, it will have more shaft play.

Thanks for the comments... and you say it wont fit? The kid that originally had the car said he.had an hy35 on it...i think he said he had to grind a little bit of the hotside of the turbo to get it fit. Is there any other way i could get it to fit? Thanks

Don't say anything if you are not sure ok... (asked in very good way).

Yes it will fit, if the tolerances of Casting are a little off sometimes, you can grind the little lip on the 9cm turbine housing and it will not rub.
HX35 would not fit though, but we are not talking about that.

No spacer, no machined flange angles.

Pretty new manifold arrived today, it's a treadstone knockoff manifold but I'm very impressed with the quality of it. The exhaust ports are nice and big and it's beefy. I ported the T3 outlet a little and smoothed some of the casting but other then that it came good to go and you can't beat 190 shipped.

Found a few problems/hurdles with using the HY35. The center cartridge needs to be rotated to get the oil fittings at the right angle and the wastegate needs to be modified a little to use internal still. But the biggest problem I've found is the exhaust side hits the block with the manifold I'm using.

Unless the knockoff and name brand manifold are much different. There was no way I was going to get that mounted and clearenced without serious grinding. This my SN on a different forum. I ended up using a ERL. But apparently the real deal works.

From my personal experience it won't work.... (told if a very good way).

Knockoff junk has a different flange angle either at the head, the turbo, or both. The only ones that work properly are the real Turbonetics manifold- though I was under the impression Treadstone bought the casting copyright from Turbonetics....perhaps they're not machining angles properly or something.

The Chinese eBay copies are all 100% useless.

Hey guys, i went to the local diesel shop in town and brought my turbo in and was going to see if i could get a rebuild kit for it and they said that the amount of shaft play (minumim side to side) was acceptable and said it didnt need a rebuild. So with that being said, i plan on putting in on. I have already removed the previous turbo and mocked the hy35 up and everything seems to fit. I need to buy 2 new hoses ( fromt turbo to intercooler, and housing to intake). I also need to buy new fitting and lines for the hy35. Could you guys please let me know ( links to specific parts would be great) what fittings/lines i need to buy, or anything else i may need? Would be greatly appreciated!

If it's used, you should rebuild it anyway. I've had customers send turbos that had shaft play "within spec" which were full of metal from oil contamination and ready to fail at any minute. They also can't tell you if the turbo has evidence of turbine seal leakage unless they removed the turbine housing at the very least.

If you don't know the source- meaning if you didn't witness the running engine that the turbo came from with the turbo still installed, you should get it rebuilt or rebuild it yourself. It's always better to start with a clean slate so if you have problems you can generally rule out the turbo altogether.

Thanks for the reply. I understand exactly what your saying. With that being said im going to throw it on anyway and worste case sinario i will take it back off and rebuild it, or just buy a new one if it is shot as i can not rebuild it myself and i could just buy a good one for cheaper then the price to have it rebuilt. With that being said, what parts do i need to swap it ( links would be great) i know i need a -12an return. Whats the easiest way to set that up? also, i already have the feed line, but what fitting do i need on the turbo for the feed line?: Thanks
Jordan

Hey, i got most of the stuff ordered to finish swapping the turbo in.

-10 an return line kit- EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

-4 an Feed line fitting- EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

Already have a -4 an feed line running from the Oil filter Housing.

Also gonna order- Earl's Performance Couplers 966304ERL - SummitRacing.com

And for an oil pressure gauge- Russell AN Flare Unions and Caps 670290 - SummitRacing.com

my Question now is, do i need a oil restrictor for the feed line cause im running a -10 an Return line?

Thanks for any help!
