Ok so long story short. I don't have the right dipstick installed. Making due till I find one. I dropped the pan to replace the filter and only got about a quart or two of fluid. How many quarts do I put in to get me in the ballpark of proper level. The only thing I can find is the overall capacity. Something like 7.1 quarts. I don't know if that includes what goes in the tc or just what goes in the case. Any help is welcomed.

I assume you are talking about the automatic transmission, but you're not clear on that. If you don't know how much drained out, you don't really know how much to add. It doesn't just drain out like the engine does. I put over 7 quarts in mine when I changed it, but I pulled the valve body and let it sit over night.

Yes sorry I thought the reference to sp2 and the tc would be a dead give away. I know I drained out 1-2 quarts. I also know that wasn't enough to operate the transmission properly. Every transmission I have ever worked on before had 2 specifications. One with just a filter change and another with a complete fluid change including the torque converter. I assume when you pull the valve body you in essence remove a lot of check valves that would otherwise hold fluid above it. The only real reason for me changing the filter and fluid is I'm about to put the car back on the road and I don't know when the last time this was done. What little I drove it seemed ok other than being low. Just trying to nail down all the maintenance before something catastrophic happens. I plan on getting the right dipstick as soon as one comes available. Unfortunately DSM's and dsm parts pull a premium when not horded around here. I have one out of a Spider right now just to plug the hole.

I want to say with a normal filter change, its like 2-3 qts. 7.1 qts in total should be in a FWD auto tranny. For asurrance, I would use RTV on the gasket for the pan. Mine always has a little leakage unless I use a little RTV.

For the dipstick, hit up member: Stangmurdera on here. He specializes in parting out DSMs.

Awesome thanks for the info!
