I have a G2 Eclipse, I've owned for for 8 months. previous owners put on all new belts 3 months before selling.

I was going maybe 50? when i stated to hear the timing belt hit the plastic cover,
pulled off the timing belt check panel and what do you know.... timing belt is fine, however i found this in there....

Kinda a newbie so I'm not sure what this came off of... but now my timing belt is really loose, hvnt drivin it since that happened bc I don't want it to jump.

Anyone know what that ring is and or how to fix the problem?

Thanks!

Bearing shield from a timing belt idler/tensioner pulley.

You need to stop driving the car RIGHT NOW and check the timing belt, water pump, and idler/tensioner pulleys. Who knows what the previous owner actually installed, or if they did it right.

Just to add to the last post. If the timing belt is loose don't even turn the car over. You could do some serious damage since you have an interference engine:

Jus is right!

Stop driving the car!

As soon as you pull the timing belt cover off, you will see what has failed.

I drove it 3 miles home then onto lift ramps, I'd have to life the engine to remove the left engine mount right? what would be the best way to go about that.

and what should I look for? just something missing?

One of the pulleys circled in read will be missing the grease cover.

Yes, you need to remove the driver side engine mount and you can either use a lift or put a jack on the oil pan with a piece of wood.

True story. That sealed the fate of my old RS Turbo.

Did it run different for those 3 miles? If you find that you broke something it maybe worth pulling the rad right away to check ## valves and replace the HG. Just my op.

If it skipped a few teeth and bent a few valves, a quick leak down test would show it. With out going thu the time, money and labor on a "maybe"

Interesting on that site where both motors are shown for being under a 420A page ... but find it interesting that a bearing shield flew off like that from the bearing, unless the previous owner was pressing against this shield to make it weak to fly off the bearing like it did..

That would have really caused a belt jump real bad.

I took off the engine cover and everything in the head seems to be in order, no presents in the oil pan either so hoping I'm good there. car drove fine on the way home, didn't notice any difference except for the noise of the belt against the cover.

I've never seen this before... least not here online. hopefully it was just a bad instal and I don't fine more surprises over time.

Iv'e stripped most everything around the engine to check for "newer" parts.... see what they did to the thing.

having a crap ton of trouble with one of the bolts on the engine mount, could it be that i don't have enough pressure on the lift?

thanks so much, you guys are awesome!
