Hi I just recently took interest in cars when I bought a 98 GSX roughly one year ago from my dads friends son. I knew it would be a good car to learn tuning and modding on and I got it for a roughly fair/cheap price. It had it's fair share of problems from the start but being my first manual car, I was just going to get the learning curve down and drive very conservatively. After a few months I met some people and started to get into the technical side of things. That is where I stand today.

Once a few months had passed I noticed in higher gears at high rpms that the clutch was slipping since my speedometer would quickly go up but of course the car would not actually be accelerating. This was my first sign it was time to rip it apart but I held off for a little while to troubleshoot any other possible problems that I could fix in the process. I began to notice that whenever I was in neutral and went into first sometimes as the car started rolling it would pop into neutral again before I was actually moving. This problem started to get worse and worse so eventually I would just leave it in first whenever I was at a light and hold down the clutch. There is also a slight grind when going from neutral to reverse and even between first to second it feels a little grindy. Of course from neutral to first it was terrible. So that is where I stood, that is when I decided to rip apart the trans and go to town.

(Btw during the same time period, I installed my Hallman Manual Boost Controller, crushed 1g bov, did some sanding, and some painting in the engine bay.) (Will post some before and afters of this now)
(Edited: Oh and I had a K&N air filter on it when I bought it)
Here are some pics before I ripped it apart.

So... from what I've looked at so far. (just had a quick minute glance so not exactly sure yet) I can see that the third fork has wear on it and also maybe the first and second. Need new shift forks, syncv rings, and first gear.

I don't know much about cars, and am trying to learn so if I didn't word something right feel free to tell me. I'm sure there are a lot of other things I need too inside of the transmission, figure I'll replace things that look like they might not make it another year or so.. and also the slave cylinder, throw out bearing, and timing belt.

So.. what i'm looking at getting would be..

New 1-2 fork

New 3-4 fork- 2G

New all bronze synchronizer blocker rings 1-5 including double synchro 2nd, OEM- 2G style

New 1-2 synchronizer hub
New 1-2 synchronizer slider

New 1-2 synchronizer springs
New 3-4 synchronizer springs

New 1-2 synchronizer shoes
New 3-4 synchronizer shoes

New seals

New tapered roller bearings on each end of intermediate shaft

New 1-2, 3-4, and 5-R roll pins

New center diff spider gear side shims

The rest of the parts seem to be fine in the transmission after looking at them. I'm thinking all of the gears are fine, aren't they known to take a beating and do fine up to 600 hp? I'm not looking to make a lot of power even if I make some small upgrades. Just need to get everything rolling as daily driver right now. Eventually I'll go for a bigger turbo and stuff but for right now I just have 3in catback, Hallman manual boost controller, boost gauge, a crushed 1g dsm bov. I'm thinking turboback exhaust eventually, some work with the dremel up in there also, new turbo, bigger fuel pump. I've got my clutch and flywheel ready to go and then these parts for the tranny is what i'm looking at. I just don't want to miss anything important and have to take it all apart again.

and what I already have to install is...

Act 2100

Right now i'm in the process of ordering the transmission parts, and figuring out how to disconnect the o2 sensor so I can install my catback. Eventually I'd like to go for a bigger turbo, fuel pump (re-wired), and maybe replace all the piping and do an engine bay cleanup.

If I missed anything, or left anything out, or if anyone just has any advice for me i'd appreciate it. This is my first time really working on a car at all beyond putting air in the tires :D So it has been a learning process along the way and I've had my dad and some DSM friends to help me.

Anyways this is my first post on DSMtuners while i've been lurking for a while here I just never had anything to post until I started working on my DSM. Oh, yeah.. i'll get it painted too! Hopefully I posted this in the right area and all my pics properly embed! Well anyways, thanks! Looking forward to having my DSM on the street again.

Great progress man, you should really move this to the journal section!

Awesome Stuff!!

What kind of Coilovers are those?

I don't have the box on hand, but the caption I have on one of my photos was "1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Coilover Kit Blue", unsure though. Was a gift from a family members friend Christmas 2011.

Wasn't even sure if I needed, haven't done much besides some cleaning and painting of the brake calipers for anything around the suspension system.

Love the color choice! Peice of advise though. If you have the trans out already and have the cash just rebuild the whole thing.

Right now i'm on a budget and since it's my daily driver i'd like to get it up and running ASAP so for now i'm thinking...

New 1-2 fork

New 3-4 fork- 2G

New all bronze synchronizer blocker rings 1-5 including double synchro 2nd, OEM- 2G style

New 1-2 synchronizer hub
New 1-2 synchronizer slider

New 1-2 synchronizer springs
New 3-4 synchronizer springs

New 1-2 synchronizer shoes
New 3-4 synchronizer shoes

New seals

New tapered roller bearings on each end of intermediate shaft

New 1-2, 3-4, and 5-R roll pins

New center diff spider gear side shims

AND timing belt, slave cylinder, change some fluids..

that's what I had in mind, always open to suggestions though on anything I might need to look at to see if there is wear and tear on.

+1 to a full transmission rebuild. Also great progress so far. Not sure how you have been messing around with cars but a transmission rebuild is not for the faint of heart. Have fun and good luck.

hey bra for being new to the car scene and tunning your definitely making some great progress!! keep it up and trust me anytime you run into problematic you'll find an answer on here or find some good folks who can help. also youtube "jafromobile"the man has some excellent videos and advise for our dsms

Thanks, Actually i'm already subbed to him. I used his instructional videos in order to take my tranny out actually. Very, very descriptive instructional videos.

After replacing wear and tear parts, rebuilding the tranny, installing the catback, clutch, and flywheel I also plan on replacing the turbo, exhaust manifold, and downpipe. Anyone have any good or bad experiences when picking out a turbo setup? Any small things I should know about that may not be posted elsewhere or something I may just miss? For the exhaust system right now I just have my SRS 3inch catback that I am going to install, but I was having trouble figuring out how to disconnect the o2 sensor w/o having a pc nearby to help me. I think I saw some information on the forums on how to disconnect it, so once I get all of that done and the catback on i'd like to replace the downpipe, and exhaust manifold with plans to change the turbo sometime in the future too.

Make sure to use a OEM throw out bearing. The aftermarket ones fail pretty regularly one these cars.
