So in my excitement to fire up the Talon I hooked up my battery - only to hear the 100amp Alt fuse pop when the positive was hooked up. Instantly I thought " Alright, so I have a ground at the Alternator." Well, as luck would have it I haven't eyeballed a properly installed Alternator in a while and I have two questions.

1 : Charge Post - On my charge post from the Alternator I have a plastic ring. However on the post itself, there is a nut - then the charge wire, and then another nut on top of the charge wire to hold it on. I can't recall if there should be a rubber washer between the bottom nut and the charge wire or not.

2 : I have a large flat metal ground with an 8-10mm nut through it. I cannot recall where this should bolt, but I assume it is the ground for the Alternator? (Seen hanging above the oil filter.)

If someone could share with me how this wires up or share a picture (as google has failed me apparently) it would be highly appreciated! Luckily I have a spare 100amp fuse ready to go, just don't want to blow it through trial and error.

Update : I replaced the fuse and unhooked everything from the Alternator. Removed the hanging 10mm bolt/bracket and discovered that it seems to be just for mounting the wiring as no wires are connected to it/it loops around the entire loom.

So, upon installing the new fuse and unhooking the alternator, the car does not blow the 100amp fuse and all electrical components work perfectly. So, now the question is - what am I missing/doing that would have blown the fuse the first time? The white wires are not touching the case of the alternator, then again I have that post with a single nut on it and it simply has the plastic shroud around the post. Is this as it should be?

Thank you.

I just tried - no crossed wires or broken grounds - same issue. I went ahead and removed the alternator. Now on my way to get it tested. God Forbid it's a bad alternator. I'll likely shoot the car.

Edit : Alternator is shot. Testing machines won't test beyond energizing the unit.

What should the resistance be?

It should be an open circuit. Or a very high resistance at least.

I wouldn't be surprised if you check it and it shows near zero resistance.

If you take it to a place like AutoZone, the machine will check for a short as part of the testing. It will quit the test as soon as it begins and show FAIL for everything.

That's exactly what it did. :/

Why, I never thought to do that!
