Alright everyone after searching the forums, I've not really found enough information to help me make a definitive decision on my turbo choice for now.. Here are my choices an Evo 3 16g for 375 dollars with around 10k miles on it or an MHI TDO5H 18g freshly rebuilt with OEM parts for 300 dollars. My horsepower goals aren't crazy, for now I'm looking to make in the range of 400hp..my car will be weekly driven with trips to the drag strip a few times a year. Really hoping for some opinions from those who have ran those turbos or have any helpful info..

Thanks ahead of time everyone!

With hp goals of around 400, I'd rule out the 16g because you will need to push the turbo to its absolute max to reach that level. If you are stuck on 400 I'd do some more research on a turbo choice and figure out what fuel you want to run.

The 18G certainly seems like a much better deal considering the fresh rebuild (if it was done correctly) and lower price tag....

It's being rebuilt by the seller who is a member of this site, and from my understanding it isn't his first rebuild and he has done it before on other 18g turbos. I definitely realize that doesn't mean it's being done right but as of right now I plan on having it installed by a reputable shop here in Toledo, so I guess if nothing else I could have them check it out before they install it.

As far as my goal horsepower right now, I realize that might change once the car progresses but I'm hoping by then maybe I'll have an Evo sitting in my driveway haha

hmm, odd. I have been looking myself, but must have missed that one.

This is most likely due to looking more for a big evo III 16g. I am looking for about the same power you are (400wtq), but looking for a turbo that will still give 10-12 pounds of boost at lower rpm's and about 18 pounds in the higher registers.

I am guessing a 16g can do that, but am not sure about the 18g.

Although I think I could overlook it a little bit if I could find a rebuilt MHI 18g for $300:thumb:

18g's are pretty good turbos mostly over looked cause people go with a 16g or a 20g. For your goal of 400tq you are going to have to run more than 18lbs of boost on either of these turbos. I don't make 400tq at 18lbs on my turbo.

I've had the following turbo's (all with td05h turbine wheels), big 16g (not the evo III), 18g, and 20g with the turbine clipped 7 degree's. The 16g and 18g are pretty much equal. The clipped 20g was a little lazy, but was a monster after 4K. I would recommend the EVO III 16g. Tune the car well, and see how you like it. It might or might not get you 400whp, but at least you'll get the feel of the quick torque, and maybe the 400whp won't be so important anymore.

See that's where I'm really torn, I've read about the Evo 3 and the way it hits. My biggest thing I guess, is that I'd rather get a somewhat used Evo III than a misrepresented 18g that's not even an 18g..I'm still really on the fence about this..

Non-MHI, ad states the turbo was used for 2K after being rebuilt. ANY turbo from an unknown source that has been used since being rebuilt is a used turbo...doesn't matter how many miles it has. I've had guys destroy new turbos in a week because their engine was contaminating the oil.

Good luck.

Information from a source I know I can trust! The turbo from that specific ad has been sold already and he said he had another 18g he was in the process of rebuilding currently and would let me know when it was finished. JusMX141, the Greddy 18g you have posted definitely caught my eye but I was hoping to stay internally gated.. I do however trust your work and opinion as much as anyone on this site!

I also see a WTB ad posted by that member for blown turbos- definitely keeping an eye out for a possible Freelancer based on the info you've given here.

If it's the one I saw in the classifieds, it doesn't look like a true MHI turbo.

Agreed +1. HELL to the NO on that "turbo." Sometimes a deal is to good to be true. I've never seen an 18g with a "turbocharger" labeled stamp on it, let alone be in that style tdo5 comp cover. Most look like the 18g GReddy made for our cars or like the one Jusmx141 is selling on the classifieds right now which has a tdo6 comp cover (and a DSM logo...).

look at this one if you don't want to get ripped:
REBUILT Greddy 18G DSM Bolt-On Turbo - DSM Classifieds

However IMHO, if you want to get to 400hp more easily in an MHI cartridge, then look more towards the 20g (specificall the td05 comp cover and turbine wheel for better spool) because it will be a lot less difficult to push to 400, and i think it might be easier to find a cheaper 20g even under the price of an 18g. Ok, what kind of dyno do you want to get these results on? DynoJet? Dyno Dynamics? Mustang? Dynapak? Butt dyno? They will all read differently, so your results will vary. That would help out a lot in making your decision.

Why bother running that low of boost on a 16g? You might as well go back to a 14b if that's all you're going to do and let someone actually put it to use.
